X Factor slips under the magic million

The audience delivers its verdict to X Factor's first verdict show as 18 year old Chris Doe is sent home.

18 year old Chris Doe was reportedly left in tears after being eliminated from The X Factor, but it will be Seven execs who may well be weeping today at the figures of 978,000 for the verdict edition of the show last night.

Slipping under the 1m mark without Junior MasterChef around is bad news. While it was whipped in Melbourne by the Brownlow Medal, it did benefit in Sydney with a healthy 367,000.

The Brownlow pulled 982,000 viewers for the night, with 667,000 in the host city and just 12,000 in Sydney on TEN (and another 12,000 live on ONE). Update: It drew a combined audience of 1.06 million viewers on the two channels.

A Current Affair‘s interview with Reg Grundy pipped Today Tonight with 1.35m over 1.33m.

TEN won the night.

  1. The X-Factor is absolutely massive in the UK and produces genuine stars. Why is the Australian public so difficult to please? There are some really talented performers on the show. It seems that in Australia, every successful format has a very limited lifespan, even when the same format remains successful overseas. Big Brother – massive, then people stopped watching. Idol – massive, then people stopped watching. Survivor – massive, then people stopped watching. CSI – massive, then people stopped watching. Lost – massive, then people stopped watching.

  2. the Brownlow is a big event, 1 million over the 3-4 hours that its on is pretty big. X factor can compete with that…..

Not saying that it will pick up next week, but if they had this on at the start of the year up against some no name shows then it certaintly would rate higher than 1m, its not an excuse its just fact. seven have to judge whether 1m is good enough against MC, and make a decision on a 2nd series….

  3. Boring judges, karaoke teenagers, second-choice host and a painfully drawn out process.

If that’s what programmers think we want to see on television it explains a lot about the state of the industry.

  4. What works in the UK doesn’t necessarily work over here, obviously. But in the UK, the results show is on the same night an hour later or something, which wouldn’t work here.

Then again, hearing ‘Fix You’ and ‘Stop And Stare’ being butchered was pretty arduous.

  5. Why don’t they just call this the Australian idol x factor! I mean it’s not meant to be all nice and fluffy! What’s with the group performance??? That’s so idol. An the whole living in the same house once again very idol. Come on seven this show is meant to bitchy fireworks contestant against contestant, judge against judge. Stop this lovey dovey stuff! Seven’s production is up on ten version but falls way short of the uk version. If they want the ratings up move as far away from any idol commponets. As for xtra factor it’s got some promise after tightening up.

  6. How bad is Jacobz, the format, the talent, the xtra factor – but how good is the set and the fireworks! Those poor judges, I feel sorry for them actually – they are all very good, but they are made to look like idiots when they are trying to praise such hopeless talent.

  7. how can people want it to fail? it might not be to some peoples taste. but people are always saying that networks should take more risks and put some decent effort into the shows. 7 took a huge risk with this show, and it is very well made tv. it might not have paid off the way they wanted to but should not discourage the tv industry to make decisions like this.

next up is ten’s Don’t Stop Believing. another talent show franchise that they are apparently spending millions on that they think is the “biggest Aussie tv show ever”. i probably won’t watch it because it is not to my taste, and it will be a flop. but i would never want it to fail but would wish it all the best. shows like this put hundred of good tv talents in a job. i would much rather shows like this than the factual reruns that would be put on otherwise.

i think 7 had more than enough reason to think it could work. in almost every country that the X factor has broken rating records in were countries that Idol had just died a slow death in. and Australian clearly aren’t over reality talent shows the way people seem to think. AGT was getting 1.9million earlier this year against masterchef and top gear.

  8. If this is the best we have, no wonder people don’t want to watch it. This type of show isn’t liked any more. idol had it’s time in the sun for a year or 2, but gradualy everyone got sick of it and the talent dried up. this show won’t make into another season and god hope it doesn’t

  9. @ Todd…. why does everyone keep giving X Factor excuses. First it was… it’ll pick up during the live shows… oh it would have rated better if Junior wasn’t on…. now it’s The Brownlow…. come on…. it’s the show

  10. It would probably have been around 1.2 if it wasn’t for my juddy 😀

But gee 7, give me a break. TV was on yesterday before I went to classes (at 7am), xfactor was on (72). TV was on when I got home mid afternoon and xfactor was on. xfactor was on 7 last night followed by xtrafactor (72).

This is not the way you want to treat 72 surely? This is master/junior crap all over again.

  11. It seems the era of singing shows is at an end.

At least wait a couple of years before trying Idol, X Factor again- time for some newer people to develop their talents.

It also proves the old saying that lightning doesn’t strike twice – X Factor flopped on Ch 10 in 2005 and now in 2010 its done so again for Ch 7.

  12. it was very drawn out, im glad i recorded it so i could fastforward through to the last few minutes.

it was an interesting concept though, seeing the judges up there with their top 3, and also the voting off part.

  13. I know it’s a horrible thing to say, but I’m glad the audience are punishing this show. Hopefully seven have learned their lesson about hiring insensitive loud-mouths. Kyle casts a murkiness over everything he’s involved in so hopefully, Finally, he’ll stop getting hired.

  14. I can’t believe this show will be back next year, people are over these Idol type shows.

And the xtra factor should go as well, it got less than 100,000 the other day.
