ABC appoints new head of Science and Natural History docos

Documentary filmmaker Karina Holden has been appointed Commissioning Editor for ABC's Science and Natural History Documentaries.

ABC has announced Karina Holden as Commissioning Editor for Science and Natural History Documentaries, as the final appointment in its revamped Documentaries commissioning team.

Most recently Head of Production for Oxford Scientific Films Australia, Holden began her TV career at the ABC Natural History Unit 15 years ago. Since then she has worked as a specialist documentary filmmaker producing programs for Discovery Channel, Animal Planet, National Geographic Channel, SBS and ABC TV.

At Oxford Scientific Films Australia she was the executive producer in charge of local and overseas commissions, responsible for program development.

Awards for her films include the prestigious CINE Golden Eagle and Best Director at the Asian Television Awards, as well as prizes at the New York Festival, International Science Film Festival and Jackson Hole Wildlife Festival.

Alan Erson, Head of Documentaries said, “Karina is obviously a highly experienced documentary maker. She also has strong relationships with Australian producers and international broadcasters. She’s going to make a great contribution to natural history and science on ABC TV.”

ABC recently appointed Chris Thorburn, Commissioning Editor for Contemporary, Religion and Ethics Documentaries. Edwina Waddy is in charge of Documentary development and Erson remains Commissioning of History Documentaries.

Holden will be based in Ultimo from today.

  1. Should be an easy job, science and history are virtually non-existent on television these days. That’s excluding occasional pseudo-scientific documentary on ghosts or repeats of boring anthropomorphic narratives of the lives of African ferrets. Australian story is not history either, it’s rubbish.
