This weekend the spotlight turns to Women’s sport again on ABC1 as Australia’s national female football team, the Matildas, face reigning FIFA Women’s World Cup Champions, Germany.
Newly recruited Stephanie Brantz will host the broadcast with match commentary from Peter Wilkins and former Matilda, Alicia Ferguson.
The international friendly match takes place in Wolfsburg, Germany.
The Matildas will be keen to impress coach Tom Sermanni after a disappointing loss to the host nation, South Korea, in the Peace Queen Cup final last weekend.
Stephanie Brantz says the ‘friendly’ between the reigning world champions and the Matlidas promises to be anything but friendly.
“The Matildas will be keen to make up for their loss in Korea,” says Stephanie.
“The game is great preparation for next year’s World Cup in Germany but they will want to finish off this international tour with a solid win after dominating the group stages of the Peace Queen Cup against tough opponents.
“Of course you can expect the Germans to be superbly conditioned with well drilled tactics and a game plan they’ll execute with clinical efficiency.
“They’ll be looking for a big win so it should be a great game.”
Football: Women’s International airs Saturday, October 30th at 3pm on ABC1.

Barry to Barry 2. You’re right mate, I wrote that incorrectly….Oops!
I did know that Soccer is the most popular code in South Africa with the indigenous population but according to http://www.southafrica.info/about/sport/soccer.htm
it is referred to in SA as Soccer and not football which is the point I was trying to make. Many games are referred to as “football”, soccer is just one of them.
Wrong Bazza Wrong!!
Rugby union more popular than football in South Africa?
Having lived in southern Africa for 5 years I can state categorically that Football aka soccer is way bigger than rugby union.
does Australia even care about soccer?
it should be shown on community channel only as the audience it gains will justify it
Barry –
First – Football was called Football centuries B4 someone decided to register the name Football at the local registry. The name ‘Association Football’ came way after Football was played and name.
Second- Football is the Most popular sport in Sth Africa, daylight second. Only the minority white population would say otherwise.
@ Tim and Secret Squirrel. Put your passports away! The term “football” is a generic term used to describe any game that involves using your foot and a ball. The English game of Association Football, also known by its English abbreviation – Soccer, is the most popular code of football in the world and is known in many countries as simply “football”. However In every country where it is not the most popular code of football e.g. Australia, New Zealand, Canada, United States and South Africa – it’s called Soccer! What the French governing body chooses to call it is no concern of ours! Football for the majority of Australians (depending on where you live) will always be – AFL or NRL….but nice try!
Why not live?? It’s on about 2am on October 29th (Friday) Perth time. Surely they could show it live and then replay it…but why on Saturday???
Just give it to Foxtel…
@bill – they don’t use their hands so of course it’s football.
@ Bill, don’t be stuck in the dark ages with the rest of the minority. We play under the banner of the FFA, Football Federation of Australia who are governed by FIFA (Fédération Internationale de Football Association). No soccer mentioned.
it says Football but the article is about soccer
THis would be better on GEM.
So it’s not Live then, but on about a 36 hour delay.
