It’s all about Laura Linney

If you like United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie and Weeds why on earth aren't you watching The Big C?

If you haven’t yet caught an episode of The Big C you’re missing out.

Laura Linney is just too wonderful. Episode Two this week is better than Episode One.

The show is only 30 mins, and if you like those other cable mini dramas like United States of Tara, Nurse Jackie and Weeds (which follows after it) you will love this one.

There’s a great moment where she is looking at the blurry reflection of her naked, middle-aged body in the fridge in her kitchen. And she says to herself “Oh stainless steel, you are so kind…..” It’s funny and moving at the same time.

The cast includes Oliver Platt and Gabourey Sidibe who was nominated for an Oscar for Precious.

It’s playing on GEM (Ch 90) on Wednesday nights at 9:30 (yes against Tara), but the Pilot is replaying on Tuesday at 10:30.

  1. @Jason – you obviously haven’t watched The Big C otherwise you’d know that it is an uplifting show. The script displays both wit and warmth and the characters are intelligent and likable. Well, except maybe the brother. It’s a comedy drama with a little dark humour at times. It is a completely different program from the likes of RPA or Last Chance Surgery or Embarrassing Medical Conditions et al.

  2. This show is far from depressing…geeze….watch it before you criticise…it has such smart dialogue and odd characters…it takes a witty swipe at death….without playing at the heart strings…it think it is a very clever show. Pity it’s hiding away on GEM.

  3. Give me comedies, give me travel docos, or art docos, or history docos,. Give me movies. Give me anything but this. What is it with crapola like this about diseases. Things like RPA, last chance surgery and the like. I just don”t get the type of people that get off on this type of thing. Like slowing down at a car crash to have a good look to see if there is any blood. Thankfully no-one i know watches this type of dour stuff. Life is hard enough, we don’t need to be reminded of it through this type of “entertainment”.

  4. Nice to see you agreed with my review too David.

Might be delicate topic to discuss but done in funny and sensitive way
Certainly not a depressing topic or show.
