Kerri-Anne: AFL players “picking up strays.”

Updated: Kerri-Anne Kennerley branding girls who socialise with players as 'strays' as Nine now seeks to qualify its own statements.

Kerri-Anne Kennerley has weighed into the debate on AFL footballers being questioned over an alleged sexual assault.

On her Nine morning show today Kennerley was interviewing Peter ‘Spida’ Everitt whose comments on Twitter yesterday sparked calls for his travel show to be dumped.

Referring to AFL players she said, “Their behaviour is in the spotlight. They know that.

“But they put themselves in harm’s way by picking up strays.”

Before Everitt could respond she added, “Now they’re laughing at me on the floor here for saying ‘strays’, but come on, we know girls, …forever, this is not a new thing. Girls have been throwing themselves at famous sports people for years.”

A Channel Nine spokesperson told the Sydney Morning Herald that Kennerley would not answer questions directly about the incident but released a statement:

“In relation to the ‘stray’ term used, responsibility cuts both ways with these sort of things, and not with just the one party.

“What she was speaking to Spida about was the fact that, not one party can be blamed for this. The responsibility lies with the girls as well as with the guys when you’re talking about alcohol-fuelled situations at three o’clock in the morning.”

Collingwood has confirmed two players have been questioned by Victoria Police but have not been charged.

Everitt’s travel show The Great Australian Doorstep currently airs on 7TWO.

Neither Seven nor Everitt have given any comment to emquiries from  TV Tonight.

Update: Nine has now qualified its statement it issued to media this morning.

The above statement was by no means meant to play down the very serious allegations of rape and domestic violence. It was in reference to a small segment of the conversation between Spida and Kerri-Anne.

  1. @Cliff

You are spot on. KAK is no better than the Mufti who made these comments

  2. cheers Cam

Spida’s argument (as heard on Nova 100 with Kate and Hughesy) is as ridiculous as saying if a woman dresses “provocatively” she’s asking for it.

    the link to that interview…

  3. @ Cliff – you are a genius mate.

Girls have every right to throw themselves at famous people if they want to but as Cliff pointed out it doesn’t give you the right to rape someone.

  4. How can people defend KAK?

This woman was not a stray and was with her boyfriend when she was allegedly raped.

I suggest KAK and some here read the report in The Australian before defending KAK theaustralian.com.au/news/nation/pack-rape-claims-against-collingwood-players/story-e6frg6nf-1225934060155

Also read the comments of Catherine Lumby who saw this coming smh.com.au/afl/afl-news/magpie-denials-as-smears-emerge-20101005-1663y.html

Is it any wonder women are afraid to come forward when we have sick attitudes drom media personalities like KAK and Everitt.

These two make me want to vomit!

  5. Well yes they do have some valid points, there are girls who go hunting for footballers to add to their list, but if what’s been reported is true, then this isn’t a case of a girl going home with a footballer. So i think it’s wrong to judge this girl, just as in many cases people jump to the defence of the players not to judge them.

  6. Thank you Cliff.

    Someone with some sense.

You can get as drunk as you like and go home with anyone but if you say “no” or “stop” then it must stop.

It does take two to tango but either party has the right to change their mind at any time.

  7. Those strays, groupies, tarts or whatever they’re called now asked for it anyhow, the moral of the story is (like don’t drink, don’t drive) don’t drink before getting laid.

    1. Chk Chk: I think the moral of the story is we should wait for the conclusion to a Police Investigation before presuming anything by either party, quite frankly. Some of the comments here are pretty offensive and presumptuous. John Silvester makes some interesting points in The Age about public hysteria, jumping to conclusions and the differences between an embarrassing night of sex and allegations of rape.

Might be time for SBS to replay the doco Footy Chicks.

  8. If you’re a woman, pi**ed and go home or to a hotel with an AFL player, or any man, with the implication being you’re going there for sex, it doesnt mean he shouldn’t stop when you say so.

  9. What on earth is everyone flapping their yaps about exactly?
No one knows what the facts of the matter are yet.
We have no idea who the players are, much less the women making the claims.
We never will either, so chill out people, all the wasted energy on this page is a bit embarrassing.

  10. Are you kidding me?

This woman should not be on air with attitudes like this. Go back to the 1950s KK.
Your sexist out of date comments are not wanted here.

The fact you are speaking in general and not regarding the specifics of this case makes it even more obnoxious. Blaming victims of rape – cuts both ways? You disgust me.

  11. Everitt’s comments weren’t worded right but he was on the right track, and Kerri-Anne use of phrase “strays” probably isn’t right either, but she’s correct – there’s some women whose sole purpose when they go out is to pick up a sportsperson or someone “famous”.
It’s not to say that All women do that.
Sexual assault is not on… I think everyone on here agrees with that.

  12. Do these girls really think going home with a stranger after midnight they are really going to have coffee?

That’s not to say rape in any form is to be condoned but it takes 2 to tango.

  13. It was just a comment, not a big deal. I’m a bit sick of girls as being made out to be all sweet and innocent, all of the time. If both the girl and guy are drinking and the girl decides to go home with the guy, why does it seem that it is up to the guy to be the ‘responsible one’. Footballers seem to be an easy target, sometimes cause they are morons but let’s not make out that girls are all suger and spice, some are just plain nasty and bitter.

The media needs to stay away from allegations until they are proven in a court of law. I think that if the guy is proven innocent, then he should be able to sue all the publications and media outlets that wrote any crap about him.

  14. Nice to see she at least stuck by her comments in a statement rather than jumping down a step and making an apology.

I totally agree with her on this issue; you simply can not blame one party just because they’re in the spotlight and it is true people throw themselves at celebrity and end up in these situations; whether it is assult or legit is up to the police and justice system but alot of the time it is discovered that these ‘victims’ have infact been wanting it themselves; people need to be aware that it takes two to tango and I highly doubt many of these high profile players would actually assault a victim given the position they are in; but by the same token they too need to learn to stop throwing themselves into situations just because they’ve been given the open invite. Then these situations wouldn’t happen.

  15. Finally – somebody with the courage to actually come out and say that you sometimes need to take responsibility for your own actions – it is a 2 way street
I give it about 10 mins before KK is pilloried
