New hitman comedy for Movie Extra

Movie Extra has announced a new comedy series about a brutal standover man who takes ‘cleaning’ to a whole new level.

Underbelly the comedy? Not exactly…

Movie Extra has announced a new comedy series that centres around a hit-man, to be filmed in Melbourne.

Written and created by Gareth Calverley (Spy Shop) and Joss King (H2O), it will feature Steve Le Marquand (Beneath Hill 60, Last Train To Freo, pictured) as Tony Piccolo, described as an “average Aussie bloke who works hard to support his wife and two kids. They think he’s a whizz at cleaning carpets – but Tony’s real profession, as a brutal standover man, takes ‘cleaning’ to a whole new level. When his two worlds collide, he’s going to need a damn sight more than cleaning fluid to clear up the mess.”

The eight-part series also includes Sacha Horler (My Year Without Sex, Praise), as his wife Cathy, plus Gia Carides (My Big Fat Greek Wedding, Austin Powers: The Spy Who Shagged Me), Gary Sweet (Cops LAC, The Pacific), Geoff Morrell, (Cloud Street, Bastard Boys), Jared Daperis (Playing For Charlie), and Samuel Johnson (Rush, The Secret Life Of Us).

“Movie Extra has un-earthed another comedy first for Australian television in Small Time Gangster,” said Peter Jenetsky from Movie Networks.

“We’ve all seen crime shows before, but never with such a black, and at times surreal, slant. With Small Time Gangster, we’ve taken the genre and given it a fresh perspective heightened by a healthy dose of laconic Aussie humour and truly colourful characters that we’re confident Subscription TV audiences will love as much as we do.”

Movie Extra is also producing a second season of The Jesters.

The series is to be produced by Boilermaker-Burberry Entertainment, a new joint company from Ewan Burnett (Last Man Standing, Dead Gorgeous), and Andrew McInally and Gareth Calverley (The Team, Andrew’s Guide, Spy Shop).

Small Time Gangster will be directed by Jeffrey Walker (Angry Boys, Rake, Dance Academy and City Homicide), to air in the first half of 2011.

  1. Movie One, Movie Extra and Movie Greats (AKA Movie Networks) need a new name and brand. Something more one word and catchy that signals not just movies buy quality TV too. Like Showtime, Showcase, HBO, Starz etc.

  2. At first I thought he had a business cleaning crime scenes/murders for criminals, which sounded a lot like that Amy Adams movie “sunshine cleaning”
