ONE holds up the main game at TEN

While TEN is fighting for direction with its newest shareholder, ONE is dragging down its Network share. Meanwhile in Week 44 of ratings Seven was again victorious.

While TEN is fighting for direction with its newest shareholder it is getting whipped in the ratings, largely due to having little to offer in digital channels.

In Week 44 its Total People remained under the 20% mark for the fifth week in a row and it trailled in its prized demographics.  The results come at a time when James Packer is said to be concerned about the performance of ONE.

At the heart of the issue for TEN is its inability to match its rivals without competitive digital channels. GO! took four times the share of ONE, while 7TWO tripled it. It only just beat SBS TWO. The wait for ELEVEN is dragging down Network shares.

But Junior MasterChef is giving TEN reason to smile with 1.45m as the second best show of the week. Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (1.24m), NCIS (1.21) and Undercover Boss Australia (1.13m) followed. They helped the network gain a little ground from the preceding weeks.

Meanwhile in Week 44 it was the Seven Network that was again victorious, with nearly a perfect clean sweep of the main game.

Seven won all cities except Melbourne, which fell to Nine.

Seven almost had a clean sweep with every night of the week, but Nine’s Funniest Home Videos and Hey Hey combo helped it win Saturday. The ABC beat TEN on Friday and Saturday.

Packed to the Rafters was again the #1 show of the week.

There are 4 weeks remaining in the current survey year.

ASTRA Week 44

Week 44.

  1. DC don’t know where you got your figures, or if you made a typo, but David’s listed figure for One in week 43 is 0.9. Although I’ve seen daily figures that are 0.7, I don’t think I’ve seen a weekly figure that low, certainly not recently in any case.

  2. A, it maybe your antenna, or it may also been your connection. Last time I had picture trouble and had a guy come to look at it, what he discovered was there was RF cable from the outside antenna to the unit above me, but only ribbon cable from the unit above me to my outlet. He replaced it with RF cable and voila! Perfect picture. 🙂

  3. Sports network ratings.
    Week 43 17 October to 23 October 2010 6PM to Midnight

    ONE – 0.7
    Fox Sports 1 – 0.7
    Fox Sports 2 – 0.3
    Fox Sports 3 – 0.2

The other sports channels are all less then this. Here are the 2 news channels-

    ABC New 24 – 0.5
    Sky News – 0.3

  4. steve, I don’t know any actual figures for One, but I know Ten have announced it’s ahead of schedule financially (i.e. break-even point will come sooner than planned for), and they’re happy with the way it’s going. It’s a highly-targetted audience, so it’s there to make money, not to be #1 overall. The Ten network posted a $150M profit this year, up from a loss the previous year (don’t remember the amount – 18M?), but I don’t know what part One plays in it (how much of the profit this year, how much of the loss the previous year when setting up – anyone know Ten’s yearly figure the year before that for a apples with apples comparison?).

If Packer wants to fiddle with One, I think it’s either…
    a. he wants to get into a battle for #1 with 7/9
    b. he wants to reduce the competition with Fox sports
    …or both!

  5. I want to thank Channel Nine for Sherlock. As well as GEM for repeating it. I watched it twice as it was that good. I hope you put it on 8.30 pm Sunday(s) next year. I’ll watch it and I suspect my family will as well. It’s an excellent series.

  6. I’ll admit I wish they’d (Network Ten) launched Eleven this year. As for HD I wished at the time they had mirrored Ten HD on SD. Because at the time I had SD and analogue only. Now I have HD. But only since a couple of days before ABC News 24 showed up due the the SD going on the blink (and being replaced).

Basically I badly want to watch some things that I’ve been waiting months or years for (from Ten). Though I guess Supernatural Season 5 will be released November 10. So even the DVDs beat the new channel. Plus I guess they’ll continue to be beaten until they launch Eleven. I don’t care about that but I do look forward to it showing up. If they are reliable also I hope even repeat things early in the morning I hope to watch it more than their main channel where they killed my favourite shows as well as ones I liked to watch (House, Medium, Smallville, Supernatural, Stargate Universe). Hopefully I’ll watch at least three of the shows on the new network.

I’ll admit HD on Ten (One) is very unreliable even SD is when it rains (Melbourne). It pixelates and pauses plus has sound problems. I don’t suppose that could be fixed or would I have to get a new antenna? Every time we get new equipment the analogue signal gets worse too. I’m not sure how it reacts to humidity yet. I doubt it’ll be wonderful. Oh well.

Good luck Eleven or is that break a leg. I can’t wait until it begins. And I hope it will show up (in January).

  7. I don’t think ONE getting thrashed in the ratings is the concern. Isn’t the main question here how cheap ONE is to operate. Does anyone have any figures.

And TEN are playing on dates here with ELEVEN. They want to launch it in 2011..simple.

  8. Donald has a point. Also, James if you’re reading this, look at it this way, Ten could have invested a couple of mil in the X-Factor.

If James Packer wants the rights to the Football & NRL why would he close ONE I mean its a vechicle custom made for both. My suggestion would be get rid of the Golf and Drag racing and bring in stuff that appeals to a broad range of people, like Pro Wrestling and put that on 3 nights a week (Raw/Superstars/Smackdown) plus their Vintage Collection. It’s not unknown for WWE to be on Ten, it was in the mid 90’s. I’d watch and you’d bring back all the Wrestling fans who don’t have the money to get Foxtel.

  9. P.S. as for :sports “re-runs” during the day on One – it was precisely my point that that’s when most of the live sport is on – NFL, NAScar, baseball, NBA, etc. The only live sport that ever falls in primetime (this contributing to Ten’s “daily” share) is F1 and MotoGP (and you see a much healthier share for One when that does happen).

  10. People have HD receivers now, yes, that is why now all the networks are launching their HD-only channels. 18 months ago, when One launched, it was quite a different story, and Ten said precisely this when they launched One, and no-one – no-one – launched a HD-only channel until August this year for that reason. All of them could’ve launched all their channels 18 months ago, but they didn’t until 2 months ago. Why do you think that is?

As for which figures am I looking at that Ten dominates daytime – the figures (and articles) on this very site! What figures are you looking at?? David wrote an article not long ago pointing out that Ten is dominant during the day, and it’s easy to see from looking at the figures. Oprah, Dr. Phil, Ready Steady Cook, Judge Judy, and The Bold And The Beautiful are all in the daily top 100. B&B gets over 400,000… in the afternoon! Except for Big Bang repeats on Go, that’s more than any show on a secondary channel has ever got in primetime, ever. 9’s daytime figures aren’t even close, and 7 is even further behind (only Sunrise rates a mention). As for cartoons, the only kids shows I’ve ever seen make the top 100 are on ABC1/2/3 (proviso, maybe they’re the only ones David bothers to list, but they’re the only ones I’ve ever seen).

Pick a day, any day, on this site where you think 9 is beating 10 during the day and tell me when it is… if you can find such a thing. David didn’t write that article for no reason at all…

  11. I do wish 10 could launch 11 right now. Really looking forward to the lineup on that.

Although I would have wished they had it to start with instead of ONE as then I could have seen Smallville continue there, rather than having to wait 2, 3 or so years for it to return to free to air.

  12. ONE HD is the largest FTA channel to be competition to pay TV channels of its kind. The remainder of the channels are too general to be large competition to pay TV channels. ONE HD would no doubt get more viewers then channels such as Eurosport, Setanta, and Fuel TV, and I would guess it would be close competition to ESPN. Now if Packer is looking at cancelling ONE HD before it loses all of its opportunities for rights to varying sports and them going to pay TV channels, then I believe that is a good idea for TEN as a company, but pay TV in Australia does not offer a broad enough package of sports channels for us to lose another sports dedicated channel. If Austar/Foxtel launched Fox Sports 4, Fox Soccer Channel. ESPN 2, ESPN Classic, and Eurosport 2 then there would be a large enough amount of channels for the sports to be shown on and the loss of ONE HD would not be as felt. But if ONE HD does close, what would replace it? Packer is saying that TEN should return to its young audience by reconsidering its programming, but 11 is a channel dedicated to that demographic so what would another channel with the same demographic offer in terms of programming? Atleast with 7 and 9 the decided to aim at different demographics then the one they target on the main channels (eg 7MATE aiming at men between 16-39 and 7 aiming at the general public). All things that should be considered before Packer goes demographic aimed channels crazy.

  13. I think it was a dumb move by TEN to take 7PM off during the games, they could have used the 30 minutes each day to give a different perspective on the them and keep the ratings up.

As for ONE HD people who are into sports will pay the $50 or so to get the channel so I see no reason why ch11 can’t start sooner rather than later. I’m predicting a soft launch right after the new year.

  14. @ Donald, i doubt that is the reason. ONE even on SD still alienates people with analogue. people in this day and age that do not have a tv capable of recieving all channels available in their area should only be responsible for themselves. why does the whole of Australia have to wait for them? not to mention ten being 5%+ behind every week based on digitals alone. its no way to run a business, letting competitors casually move foeward and do nothing.

anyway look at 7mates ratings, i think it is clear that enough people are capable of recieving HD channels especially in that demographic.

and to your other point, both ten and one are the most disadvantaged in 6am-midnight figures compared to 6pm-midnight. don’t know what figures you are looking at. Ten&One actually perform very poorly in a 24 hour day. for ten mostly because their morning shows kids trail 7&9’s by a long shot over a long period of time. and no one is interested in the sport reruns ONE dishes up during the day.

  15. To those commenting on how long it’s taking to launch 11, again, the hold-up was because doing so would then render One a HD-only channel, and they didn’t want to do that yet. The other networks have only just launched HD-only channels in the last couple of months (ABC news, 7mate, Gem), so in fact Ten aren’t that far behind the others.

Also, as David has pointed out before, daily shares are based solely on primetime (6pm-midnight). It’s unfair to base the performance of One on that, when so much live sport is outside primetime. It would be really helpful if daiily shares were for 24-hours (this would also help the primary channel, Ten, since they perform so well during the day – Ten would be up there amongst it with 24-hour daily shares instead of primetime only).

Having said that, yes they need to get 11 launched soon (waiting ’til 11/1/11 isn’t very helpful). Fixing up the primetime ratings of the primary channel would also help! They’ve really been in a rut since the Games (Ten are probably ruing the decision to show the games now – it hurt them more than it helped. 7pm figures have not recovered to what they were before the Games, etc.).

  16. Just read in the Sunday papers Rick Maier – 10’s head of drama – saying australian dramas are some of the best in the world. Whether it’s ego or head in the sand or both, I guess this means we can’t expect improvement from 10 at all.

  17. Looks like Fox8 will be showing The Walking Dead, sometime in November with Ep 1 (6 part series)…

    Ashton says:
    October 31, 2010 at 12:57 pm

Does anyone know what channel in Australia is getting ‘The Walking Dead’?

  18. TEN should launch ch11 in 12 days, on Nov 11!

They were the first (after ABC) to offer a separate digital channel, well before 7&9 so why has it taken so long get get a 2nd general entertainment channel off the ground to take on GO!, GEM, 7TWO and 7MATE?

Interesting that Parenthood out rated TGW, yes I know they are one different nights and times but in the US they are on at the same time and TGW gets double the total numbers of Parenthood.

  19. James Packer is not concerned about the current performance of One. He is concerned about the possible future performance of One when Fox current rights for so many sports expire. He is concerned about One buying more AFL and NRL, One buying international cricket, One buying tennis and golf tournaments; the things that are currently Fox big subscriber winners. The best thing he can do to protect Fox is close One down before those rights become available and One starts getting better ratings as a result (or Fox purchase price gets raised because there is bidding competition if they keep the rights).

  20. whether ONE is a sucess or not is one thing. i think the main issue is that 11 is coming a year too late, they chose to go for a low rating format for their first digital channel to chase after that alleged goldmine of advertising in netball reruns and bull riding. you’d think being the only one not having a high rating digital channel would make them the most keen to make one at first opportunity, they seem to be the least so.

they have known about their right to do so for years i don’t buy the “they are taking their time to get it right” excuse, not 3 years after they were able to start working on it.

  21. Isn’t the whole theory behind James Packer imposing himself on Ten that he doesn’t want it to get away from it’s core demographic to become a ‘number one’ seeker? For just that reason isn’t ONE a good vehicle for targeting it’s niche of sports lovers in younger age groups rather than judging it’s performance against the pure numbers of GO! and 7TWO?
