Programming theory goes the big bang

Updated: Is Nine now simulcasting episodes of The Big Bang Theory on GEM? Or is this an error?

Is this a case of more confusion from the Nine camp?

Yesterday it issued Programming Amendments for Nine that duplicated episodes of The Big Bang Theory on both Nine and GEM at the same time.

It issues a release showing “The Monopolar Expedition” and “The Electric Can Opener Fluctuation” would air at 9 / 9:30pm in Brisbane following a One Day Series match on Wednesday November 3rd.

Very confusing.

They claimed both are first run episodes despite being S2 E23 and S3 E1.

This is either an error or it is a direct result of screening the cricket in HD on GEM and being stuck with the Nine signal thereafter.

Updated: Nine has clarified when cricket ends at 10pm AEDT, GEM in Queensland switches back to Nine simulcasting for an hour due to the time difference. This will continue until March. Neither TBBT is first run which was a coding error.

  1. This has already happened in Queensland. A few weeks ago on Sunday night, GEM and 9 aired “Send in the Dogs” at 7.30pm QLD time. This went on for about 20 minutes or so until someone switched GEM over to “Random Acts of Kindness”.

  2. good point Mike… i can recall that for the previous season of two and half men they werent showing all of that season consistently and i’m not really sure if they actually screened the entire season out.

  3. I still think they 7&9 should have used their HD to show the best off theit other 2 channels and some unique programing, that way we could watch our top shows like Packed to the Rafter and Top Gear in HD but also allow them to show other programs that don’t fit the main channels. I didn’t add ONE to the list as TEN it’s unlikely to remove it’s 24/7 sports channel.

  4. Guy’s post got me thinking. Why don’t Gem show the Today show live on GEM in all states? (like ABC News 24 show ABC News Breakfast live into all states). Even if they have to repeat the last hour (Queensland) or last three hours (WA) at least viewers outside NSW/VIc can see it live?

  5. Gem did the same with the NRL Grand Final in non AEDT states. I’m guessing WA viewers are going to have three hours of Nine/WIN simulcasts after each cricket game.

  6. When I heard the news on another site I thought … hmmm…. only took them 4 weeks to put big bang on gem… but then realised it was to do with the sport being live .

  7. We gave up on Big Bang Theory and Two and a Half Men in our house, despite the fact that we really enjoyed them. The trouble is, we could never know when new episodes were coming up. We got sick of seeing the same material again and again. It wasnt just that they repeated an episode once in a while – they repeated them Many times over. I honestly dont know when new episodes were screened, but it seemed like 1 in every 20 or 30 was a new one, and never the same day twice. Maybe I’m wrong on that or maybe not, but we just gave up trying to find new episodes and started watching other stuff on other channels instead.

  8. The fact some shows are being simulcast doesnt surprise me. They are doing it with Today and a few of the other shows already so why not this too. I prefer my shows in HD so if thats the case for Big Bang then i am watching GEM instead.

Mind you it could be a tactic to try and increase GEM’s ratings which have been quite poor to say the least.

  9. I wish GEM and 7mate would die, or at least reduce the hours they’re on air. No longer can I watch any of my favourite prime time programmes in HD, instead that ‘stunning high definition’ picture is used to show repeats of the nanny or cheap SD American shows. I’d be happy for them to go back to HD breakaways so that at least nine doesn’t waste all that money they spent on upgrading their news studio cameras to full HD.
