Ratings: The home stretch begins

Networks roll out their last hopes for the ratings year as Seven steals another week of glory.

Today TV networks embark on the home stretch of the ratings year.

There are just 6 weeks left in the 2010 survey year, with Saturday November 28 as the final day of competition.

The Commonwealth Games are over and commercial networks are rolling out their last hopes with a string of new episodes this week and next including: Modern Family, NCIS, The Good Wife, Undercover Boss Australia, Medium, Two and a Half Men, The Big Bang Theory, The Mentalist, CSI, CSI: Miami, Human Target, Nikita, Sherlock, Iron Chef Australia, Bones, Highway Patrol, Criminal Minds, Beauty & the Geek Australia, Damage Control, 30 Rock and more…

There is some contention over what’s more important: Winning in primary channel or network as well as whether it is share or demos within that.

Then there will be the spin between time zones: Daily ratings are based on 6pm – midnight, but there is more push to concentrate on 6pm – 10:30pm.

There are also the weeks to subtract for Winter Olympic and Commonwealth Games. The standard is 2 weeks, even though the Olympics actually crossed across 4 weeks of Aussie ratings due to Opening / Closing Ceremonies.

And finally let’s not forget not all networks have the same amount of channels.

Steel yourself for a media barrage of facts and figures come the end of November.

But in Week 42 Seven won fair and square, despite the inclusion of TEN’s Commonwealth Games. Or perhaps because of the inclusion of TEN’s Commonwealth Games….

Top show for the week was Packed to the Rafters on 1.76m. Were it not for ABC’s New Tricks, Seven would have cleaned up the entire Top 10 shows for the week.

ASTRA Week 42

Week 42

  1. GauanoLad, except for mid-season break, F1 is on fortnightly basically, and it definitely rates. Makes a huge bump in One’s ratings each fortnight. It’s not for nothing they wanted the rights, and you want this to not count? Currently close to half-a-million people fortnightly to not count? I’m quite sure 10 would be quite happy for it to be on weekly if F1 would just accomodate them, 🙂 so it’s not really their fault it’s not there every week.

And just look at 9 network and you see that shows that were Scheduled to be there every week aren’t (as 9 draws this week’s schedule out of a hat…), so where do you draw the line?

As far as I’m concerned, everything should count (including the games). What we’re determining is which channel got the most viewers – what does it matter if they watched every single week or not? We can see from the figures that even the same weekly shows don’t get the same viewers every week.

  2. John W,
If you look at Saturday’s ratings, the highest rating show only had 1.2m….now Hey Hey was 300k short of that…big deal. Nine would be happy that it came third for it’s timeslot.

It’s a well known fact that more people watch TV on weekdays then they do on the weekend, and also less competition on Saturday.

Hey Hey will continue…They’ll crack 1m next week for sure.

  3. Wow. The Rafters seemed to have nailed another year again. Gotta say, while this year has been pretty mellow (ish) the series still manages to keep me watching. Sometimes it’s just nice to watch good writing at work along with an always pleasant cast. Every ep doesn’t have to be some big drama, which as a viewer can become predictable. I’ve been pretty happy with this season and look forward to the last few eps…of course no doubt…they have a few surprises in store to leave us hanging?

  4. Well, I don’t know sports, but I meant singular events like the F1 or the MotoGP. They probably barely rate anyway, so it’s a bit of a non-issue, but I still think one-off anythings that won’t affect the schedule the next week are pretty much irrelevant.

  5. GuanoLad, what would you define as “one-off sports”? The games are on every 4 years, so that’s regular. Struggling to think of anything that matches your description, other than specific boxing/wrestling matches, “A vs. B”. Not sure what you’re getting at.

  6. I wish they didn’t include News, Current Affairs, or one-off Sports Events in these things. They should have their own separate sections.

Anyway, I am clearly not in tune with the Australian TV watching public, because I didn’t watch any of the top 40 shows in that list. The first one that I also watched was Keeping Up With The Joneses, and that was an accident as it came on unexpectedly after the last day of the Games.

  7. Ten lost 38.4 points for the week after the first week of the comgames high. It will probably get some of that back this week. Two will lose some on saturday with the bill gone (next week is just an interview with the cast).

Hey Hey did good, got sixth spot on saturday, I would say that if its position goes below tenth or more, it will probably not return next year.

  8. I’m glad The Bill got good ratings. It was a very fitting final episode with everyone holding their heads high while walking away…

As for Hey Hey – time will tell how it will go in its ‘traditional timeslot’.

However if it goes down further Channel Nine have themselves to blame for putting it on Wednesdays and up against Masterchef earlier in the year.

I think that damaged Hey Hey’s reputation more than anything this time around – but wait and see how it goes further down the track.

  9. I think primetime should be left as 6-midnight – the first week of the games showed that people are willing to stay up late (see “primetime late” figures for last week) if there’s something worthwhile on. The openning ceremony had over 400,000, starting at midnight EDST.

David, the only demo’s I ever see mentioned are age-based – do they do genders as well? e.g. One and 7mate would be more concerned with this than age (being aimed at males, rather than specific ages). “wins” for channels like that could be based on demo’s, but overall win has to be based on overall figures. I think 7 is leading, but 9 could bring it home with new series on TBBT, given how well the repeats rate on Go. I also think share should be based on 24-hours, not just primetime. We already know Ten-One does well during the day, but this doesn’t count in “daily share”.

Disagree with excluding games, based on last 2 weeks. Didn’t bring the extra viewers, so basically Ten gets nothing at all for 2 weeks (since almost all regular programming was off for 2 weeks). Won’t affect them coming third, but would have an effect if it had happened to 7 or 9. Or do the figures for 7 and 9 for those 2 weeks not count as well?

  10. John W, i think that is the highest anyone could have expected for HeyHey 9 were probably willing to settle for a lot less. but considering 7 still won that night even though they had such a cheap lineup while 9 had one of their most expensive shows on would be a disappointment.

this week 7 seemed to go business as usual with most slots continuing new content whereas 9 seemed to go on a holiday and had repeats in most slots, ten was completely out of the game and it looked like it all payed off for 7 they are some great figures.

ten on 18.4% must be some kind of record low. i think they have screwed up the rest of their year and they are going to waste episodes of a lot of their big and expensive shows in the process.

  11. Will Nine be happy with 29th spot for Hey Hey’s return to Saturday? Wait and see I guess but I’m afraid our household isn’t interested in watching. It’s past its used-by date.

  12. there is going to be a lot to watch in the next 6 weeks, i can’t wait for beauty and the geek. that show is awesome and so underrated, i know it did well last year but it could be a smash hit. last season was a laugh per second.

ten seem to be going all guns blazing but it will be interesting to see if they can get away wih abandonning their audience for a fortnight and viewers are unphased or not. i think they will get off to a slow start with sundays ratings for modern family, JMC and offspring down significanty.
