SKY News signs with Shanghai Media Group

SKY News has signed with Shanghai Media Group to share business and trade news between Australia and China.

This week SKY News announced a programming arrangement it has signed with China’s Shanghai Media Group (SMG) for business and trade news between Australia and China.

It follows an arrangement already in place with China’s national broadcaster CCTV.

SKY’s News Director Angelos Frangopoulos said, “The SKY News alliance with Shanghai Media Group will further grow our international reach and relationships in key world markets. We will explore opportunities on news exchange and share our journalism resources on a regular basis with Shanghai Media Group.

“Each of us operates 24-hour business news channels and our program relationship will place a key emphasis on the exchange of trade and business news.”

SMG’s Mr. Li Ruigang said, “SMG is one of China’s leading news organisations and runs the country’s most influential financial news TV channel and a daily financial newspaper under the brand of China Business Network. We look forward to strengthening our English language programming with Sky News Australia for the benefit of both companies and countries.”

The arrangement follows a content sharing deal with CNN International announced earlier this week.

SKY News has made no secret of the fact it wants to bid for the rights to operate the Australia Network when its contract with the ABC expires.

  1. @ Gary – they’re not allowed to be FTA. At least not at the moment. The current FTA networks are the only ones allowed to broadcast. In future, hopefully this will be opened to other companies. Freeview in the UK has about 40 channels.

  2. It’s all very well for Sky to be signing up all these deals, but let’s face reality.
Only about 30% of households have pay tv and I’ll bet a vast majority don’t watch sky. If Sky is serious about being No 1 then why don’t they transmit as a FTA channel
