James MacArthur, best known as “Danno” in Hawaii Five-0, has died aged 72.

His family was at his side at the time of his death, according to a family statement but no further details, including a cause, were given.

MacArthur played the role of Detective Dan “Danno” Williams on Hawaii Five-0 alongside Jack Lord on CBS for 11 years from 1967.

The son of actress Helen Hayes, considered the First Lady of the American stage, and her playwright husband Charles MacArthur, he was destined for a career in showbiz.

He appeared in Disney production Third Man on the Mountain, Kidnapped and Swiss Family Robinson and, in 1961, debuted on Broadway opposite another newcomer, Jane Fonda, in the comedy Invitation to a March.

Other Broadway roles followed, as did movies, including the 1965 all-star WWII drama, The Battle of the Bulge and 1968’s Clint Eastwood spaghetti western, Hang ‘Em High.

Following Hawaii Five-0 he appeared as a guest in Murder She Wrote, The Love Boat, Fantasy Island and Vega$.

Off camera, according to the family statement, “James was an avid tennis player and enjoyed skiing, fishing and hiking. He was a skilled flamenco guitarist and a consummate reader. His passion for playing golf led him to meet and fall in love with his wife, LPGA tour player and teacher, ‘H.B.’ Duntz.”

In the new CBS remake of Hawaii Five-0 Detective Dan “Danno” Williams is played by actor Scott Caan.

  3. Another good one gone. Lots of great performances and memories.

    He was the last of the original cast of “Hawaii Five-O” to be hired and he is the last one to leave us. He created a character that will be forever associated with an iconic catchphase.

    “Book ”em Danno” for the last time and rest in peace James MacArthur.
