Next up in his “occasional” chat show, Tony Martin talks with actress, author and one-time Princess Leia, Carrie Fisher.
From Fisher’s feature film debut in Warren Beatty’s Shampoo to her acclaimed one-woman show Wishful Drinking, currently touring Australia, there’s a lot to get through; the award-winning novel Postcards From the Edge, roles in everything from 30 Rock to the forgotten Australian sci-fi movie The Time Guardian, and uncredited ‘script doctoring’ on several Hollywood blockbusters.
Talking as candidly as she does in her one-woman show, Fisher also discusses – and wrings humour from – her recent electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), the ‘advice’ she received from the late John Belushi, and her award for Bi-Polar Woman of the Year.
“At my age, I say I have loss of memory from LSD, ECT and AGE…but hopefully I lose words more like Gondola!”
Tony Martin has been spouting his nonsense for close to three decades, on TV (The D-Generation, The Late Show), radio (Martin/Molloy, Get This), in books (Lolly Scramble, A Nest of Occasionals), as a stand-up comic, and on his website The Scrivener’s Fancy.
Two chairs, no clips, and work-related talk only, A Quiet Word with… is not a show about people’s marriages, divorces, children and parents. It’s about a rather thin film and comedy nerd talking shop with someone he admires for twenty-six minutes. There are some brief opening titles, an irritatingly catchy theme tune and quite nice lighting. Apart from that, it’s just interesting talk, surprising tangents and more than a few cheap laughs.
A Quiet Word with... airs 10pm Tuesday November 9th on ABC1.

Yay! Love Tony Martin, and his chat with Bill Bailey was refreshingly different to the usual interview show fair.
Loving this show, I just wish it was on more often!!
Fisher always makes for a fascinating interviewee. She tells it as it is.
Awesome – cannot wait to see this. Saw Carrie’s recent show in Sydney and it was absolutely hilarious!!!!
haha, love that promo script. and, cool! carrie fisher is wearing uggies!
Sorry Andy but it’s the content that’s important not the format.
Martin’s approach is singular and interesting. It’s real good television.
Sounds just like the format of Shatner’s Raw Nerve.
