Aussie in the running for Spartacus role

Australian Liam McIntyre is one of three actors on the short list to replace actor Andy Whitfield in the title role of Spartacus.

Three actors are in the running to replace Andy Whitfield for the title role of Spartacus for the Starz Network.

They are Canadian Stephen Amell, Brit Aiden Turner and Australian Liam McIntyre (pictured), who appeared in The Pacific and Neighbours. He also has a fleeting bit part in tomorrow night’s episode of Rush.

Deadline reports that the three are being flown to New Zealand for screen tests, with a final decision expected as early as this week.

Amell (Closing the Ring), Turner (All My Children) and McIntyre are all said to be similar to Whitfield: relatively unknown actors with chiseled looks and impressive physique.

Turner is the most familiar name in the US because of his long run on All My Children and as a contestant on Dancing with the Stars.

The Spartacus prequel, Spartacus: Gods of the Arena, is slated to launch in the US in January with Dustin Clare. It will air later on GO!

Andy Whitfield is currently in Sydney undergoing treatment for a recurrence of non-Hodgkins lymphoma.

  1. Although I’ve never seen him “act”, I’ll have to support the Aussie!

Whichever actor gets the role, I’m sure that Deknight and Tapert will make the right choice since their other casting decisions have all been great to date.

Now they just need to give some of Tapert’s ex-Legend of the Seeker actors roles in season 2 of Spartacus: Vengeance. Craig Horner, Bridget Regan and Tabbret Bethell would all make great additions (although the two ladies are hopefully being at least considered for the role of Wonder Woman on TV).
