Merv Hughes joins Warnie

Shane Warne's new chat show will include Merv Hughes, Alicia Gorey, Darren Gough plus puppets bringing to life Billy Birmingham comedy.

Shane Warne’s new chat show, Warnie, has been brought forward from its 9:30pm start to 9:10pm next Wednesday.

Following The Block finale, this is probably a good move. After its premiere episode it will shift to its regular timeslot of 8:30pm Thursdays (Nine even confirms times through to January).

Joining him each week is Today‘s Alicia Gorey. Merv Hughes will be “the man on the street” (Sam Newman style?). Also joining is Darren Gough and puppets bringing to life Billy Birmingham comedy.

Interviews across the series include Coldplay’s Chris Martin, Sting, Dannii Minogue, (TEN shareholder) James Packer, Michael Parkinson, Russell Crowe and Richie Benaud.

The show also features a live studio audience.

“I’m a little nervous but absolutely stoked about having my own show on Channel Nine,” Warne said.

“I doubt my old mate Parky will be shuddering in his boots, but I hope I can bring my own style of fun and zest to a show so that the whole family can enjoy.”

Gary Burns, Executive Producer of Event Television for Nine, said: “Shane Warne’s open, approachable and chatty interview style will have viewers feeling like they are a fly on the wall, privy to two friends bantering. It will bring out a side to the stars that has never been seen before on television. It’s conversations between people that the Australian public will want to watch and listen to.”

Glenn Pallister, Senior Executive Producer of Warnie, said: “Having already witnessed Shane face-to-face with some of the world’s biggest stars, I’m incredibly excited about bringing something very unique and different to our screens.

“The Shane Warne you will see on Warnie is one that will impress and engage. It’s also a great compliment to the bloke that nearly every guest we have spoken to would happily swap places and be him for a day. He is a genuine legend.”

  1. Won’t Nine want to on-sell this series to the UK as well as he’s a celebrity there too? I’m guessing one of the reasons they commissioned it in the first place was that they could recoup part of the cost from a UK TV deal.
