US reports that an Ugly Betty actor is suspected of murdering his own mother with a samurai sword have exaggerated any connection with the ABC show.

Michael Brea, a New York small-time actor is in custody for the gruesome slaying, but ABC called him “just a guy in the background.”

According to the NYPD, Brea, 31, was overheard screaming bible passages and yelling “repent” during a confrontation with his mother, Yanick Brea, 55. Shortly after, she was found dead from multiple stab wounds.

Initial reports noted his onetime appearance on Ugly Betty.

But he isn’t credited on either IMDb or TV.com.

ABC spokesperson said that the news is “incredibly sad” but “he’s just a guy in the background on one episode.”

“This really has nothing to do with Ugly Betty,” they said.

  1. thanks for this article david, I’d been seeing reports on this on twitter and when I saw the picture was hard pressed to place him but didn’t bother going further, this article clears up what I suspected to be the case. The stories you decide to run are always interesting and I think in your position I would choose the same ones, the things you comment on due to being new, interesting or unusual are things that also pique my interest.

  2. So ‘The Australian’ puts “decapitates” in the headline when that doesn’t actually seem to be the case, even by what they write in the article. Why didn’t they just run with “Ugly Betty causes you to chop your parents into little pieces”?

  4. It happens here too. There have been a number of “Star of Home and Away does or says such and such” reports in rags like the Daily Telegraph that have revolved around persons with only an extra or very minor speaking role past with the show. Simply another example of the sad deterioration of the quality of journalism.

  6. I had no idea who he was so i figured he must have been an extra once or twice. You’ve given the PG version. The reports i read on what he did to his mum were absolute horrifying. Who could do something like that?
