Nine News Melbourne boss replaced

Updated: Director of News at Nine News Melbourne, Michael Venus, has resigned -effective immediately.

Director of News at Nine News Melbourne, Michael Venus, has resigned -effective immediately.

Venus ends 27 years at GTV, following industry rumours for several months his position was tenuous.

In a statement issued by the network Jeffrey Browne, Nine’s Managing Director, said “Michael’s professionalism, work ethic and news sense stand him tall amongst his peers and I wish him the very best for his future.”

Venus was not quoted in the network statement, but it notes he wished the current team well for their move to Nine’s new Docklands Headquarters.

In the volatile Melbourne news market, Seven News won the year, although Nine News won the two demos 18-49 and 25-54.

Venus will be replaced by Hugh Nailon, currently Melbourne Bureau Chief with A Current Affair.

Update: Network Director of News Mark Calvert said, “Hugh is a first class journalist with an excellent track record of making great television.

“This year he has shown superb leadership in steering A Current Affair Melbourne to a ratings win, and I have every confidence in his ability to lead the GTV9 news team.”

Nailon also spent several years as a producer with 60 Minutes.

  1. I agree with Lisa. How has Mark Calvert still got a job. Brought in to turn Today Show around, epic fail. Brought in to put Nine News Sydney back on top, epic fail. News and so-called Current Affairs now almost indistinguishable. Flashy graphics don’t compensate for hollow content. Let’s not forget ‘This Afternoon’. Missed it? Not surprising given the show was stillborn. If anyone deserves to be walked from 9’s Willoughby bunker it should be Mark “Cool Cool” Calvert.

  2. Hugh Nailon is a talented journalist and producer – Big shoes to fill but couldn’t think of a more suitable replacement to manage a new beginning for 9. Look forward to some positive changes to the nightly news. Nice job GTV 9
