Renewed: The Walking Dead

US zombie series The Walking Dead has won a second season following strong ratings for cable channel AMC.

So far only two episodes have aired, attracting 5.3 million and 4.7 million respectively.

AMC claims the series has broken TV records by reaching more 18- to 49-year-olds than any other show in the history of cable television (there is some media comment that The Sopranos and Sex and the City were higher).

That is is resonating strongly isn’t in doubt. As well as audience eyeballs it also has critical buzz (Duh, it has Frank Darabont as writer and director).

The Walking Dead debuted during the same week in 120 countries.

So far no Australian network -or Pay TV channel- has revealed acquiring the series although Foxtel is still hopeful.

  1. This is the kind of show that must be fastrracked as the likely audience for it is more likely to source through other methods.

Being a zombie based series it is also likely to beat the Australian sci-fi curse that has people turning off after a few episodes. I can see this doing very well on Australian tv.

  2. @Paul – You must be talking about the commercial networks. I don’t think either ABC or SBS would bump it if it didn’t rate well. They both have a history of bringing quality drama to Australia and showing the whole series from start to finish in the same timeslot – “Entourage”, “Big Love”, “Deadwood”, and “United States of Tara” to name just a few recent ones.

The only problem is that some of those shows have been many months, if not years, after they were originally broadcast. I really hope one of them picks up TWD sooner rather than later.

  3. @AG bullet. that’s good enough for me. i’ve been a zombie fan since vamps went all commercial and they kept changing the rules about vampires.

as a few peeps have said so far this show will be pirated to the hilt just like true blood was til its picked up and shown before it goes to DVD

i’m pretty sure they mean “drama” not “show”. its doing very well in 18-49 for a cable drama. but drama overall cannot keep up with american the reality and factuals. Jersey Shore and Teen Mom’s highs smash the 18-49 numbers WTD is now getting.

  5. I heard good reviews about this so i watched the first episode. Loved it, so i’ll get on to watching the second episode tomorrow and great that its been picked up for another season

  6. You’re probably right Paul, while I’d love FTA to get this, especially one of the HD channels. 7MATE is more likely as GEW is meant to be a female audiance. That said I’m betting it will turn up on PayTV, I’m betting Showcase as this would be better with no ads.

  7. Kev, please enlighten us to who “they” are? But, yes, you’re right! Australia is such a third world country for not having this on-air yet [sarcasm].

  8. As a reall fan of the comic book series this is based on the first episode had me a little worried but the second episode was alot stronger and I think the series is only going to get better. Hopefully someone here decides to air it although I think they have missed their window of opportunity for the first series as its the type of show thats going to be downloaded alot.

  9. That means only about 75 countries haven’t seen it yet. Not surprised that it includes us. And they wonder why illegal downloading is so popular………
