Rugby League Four Nations on Nine (but not GEM)

Rugby League Four Nations Final is live in Sydney and Brissy on Saturday, meaning Hey Hey will be later in 2 cities.

Nine will play the 2010 Rugby League Four Nations Final live tomorrow night in Sydney and Brisbane.

Hey Hey it’s Saturday will air at 10:15pm in Sydney, 9:15pm in Brissy. It remains at 7:30pm in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

There are no simulcasts on digital channels.

The rugby was originally due to air on GEM, but was dumped for two movies. Neither is Hey Hey available to Sydney and Brissy viewers on  either GO! or GEM.

Rugby League Four Nations will air at midnight in Melbourne, Adelaide and Perth.

The simmering rivalry between Australia and New Zealand boils over when Channel Nine broadcasts the 2010 Rugby League Four Nations Final live on Saturday at 7.30pm.

After disposing of England and Papua New Guinea, Australia and New Zealand return to the scene of New Zealand’s greatest victory – the 2008 Rugby League World Cup – when they meet in the Four Nations Final at Brisbane’s Suncorp Stadium.

The Kangaroos are on track to win the tournament for the second consecutive year after defeating New Zealand 34-20 last weekend.

Will the return of Kangaroos skipper Darren Lockyer be enough to continue Australia’s domination of the Four Nations series, or can the classy skills of New Zealand captain Benji Marshall give the reigning world champions the Four Nations trophy they hunger for?

The voice of rugby league, Ray Warren, will lead Nine’s expert commentary team along with Peter Sterling, Phil Gould, Wally Lewis, Andrew Johns and Andrew Voss.

Nine will also broadcast the pre-match entertainment, featuring ARIA nominee Amy Meredith showcasing their new single Faded White Dress in a world exclusive television performance and Deadly Award winner Busby Marou doing their special rendition of a Crowded House favourite before the match gets underway.

  1. @Barry: I’m from NSW and have no problem with the game being referred to as ‘Rugby’ when used in an international sense.

The fact is, there is nothing wrong (or incorrect) with calling Rugby League Football simply ‘Rugby’, as it is 1 of 2 types of Rugby Football, the other being Rugby Football with ‘union’ rules.

I, as a league follower, am disappointed that the 4 nations Rugby won’t be simulcast on GEM, seriously, it’s not like Nine will get anymore viewers by putting something different on GEM.

  2. Barry: Rugby League is a variety of rugby. Rugby Union is a variety of rugby. When Victorians switch on the TV and see rugby, the majority don’t know or care which of the two codes it is. It’s rugby.

  3. Spot the ignorant southerners!
Ah hello???…….. the “Rugby” isn’t on 9 or GEM. The “Rugby” as you insist on calling it is on 7! “Rugby” is short for “Rugby Union” as in the Wallabies, Melbourne Rebels, Western Force, Waratahs, Brumbies and Reds.
You’re as bad as that Melbourne dipstick Daryl Somers calling it “Four Nations Rugby” on “Hey Hey it’s Saturday” last week.
Channel Nine will be broadcasting the “Four Nations Rugby League”. That’s “Rugby League or just simply “League”. Different rules, different number of players , different points in fact it’s a totally different game!!! League is never called “Rugby”, except it seems in the ignorant bogan soutthern states. Calling “League” – “Rugby” is like calling “VFL” – “Gaelic Football”…oh I’m sorry isn’t it called “VFL”? Gee aren’t I incredibly ignorant for not knowing the correct name of a major code of football in Australia!

  4. You can sense the fear in these AFL posters. Why else would they comment?

Last weeks game will be ourated because this weeks game is live and is not a meaningless game like last week.

The Aus/Eng game shown in Melbourne rated 178,000 on a Sunday afternoon.

The final shown live in Melbourne would do better. 9 don’t do that though. This is why Jeff Browne is bad news.

  5. Nine should have it Live on GEM for all so Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth can see it at the same time, if not then what’s the point of the extra digital channels?

Yet another reason this should be open to Fox Sport or if we’re lucky ONE can get the Rugby some day and show in Live in HD.

  6. No HD coverage of the match – this is exactly why pay tv should be able to screen events at the same time on their own service.

When the Rugby League TV rights are up for grabs, I can only hope that Channel 9 lose them.

Converting the HD station from regular Channel 9 to GEM was an absolute joke.

  7. It could be on live in Perth from 4:30pm…noboby in Perth watches 9 news anyhow…
This is the whole problem with ratings boxes…there is not one on every tv in every home…just because some unemployed morons with oztam would watch HHiS rather than us pretty well payed resource workers who have come over from the east…no rugby league….

  8. @Jason-Perth – where do you get that figure from? The 2010 NRL GF (which rates way higher than Four Nations) pulled 221,000 + 33,000 + 75,000 in Mel, Ade, and Per for a total of 329,000. Four Nations would be lucky to get half that no matter which channel it was on or at what time it was broadcast.

Last Saturday’s Four Nations match betw Aus & NZ got the following figures: Mel-40,000; Ade-9,000; Per-7,000 for a grand total of a paltry 56,000. If you think tomorrow’s match could get anywhere near half a million in those 3 states, can I please have some of whatever it is you’re taking?

Why is it that Rugby League fans are so bad at maths? HHiS will get at least twice the numbers in Melbourne and Adelaide that Four Nations would have, and the Nine News in Perth will also give Nine way more viewers.

It sucks that fans in those states won’t get to see the game live on FTA but you can’t argue with economics.

  9. I’m glad two channels aren’t being wasted on sport. (Sorry-don’t get angry at me:-)). It’s just stupid that they made Gem a womens channel in the first place if they had to play endless hours of sport on it (ie. The cricket). Or they should have made Go the HD channel. I’m sure sport would fit much better there. They’re morons at Nine!!!

  10. GEM’S not even an HD channel, that’s what annoys me most. And when they do have the opportunity to use an HD version of a show, they go for the SD one (ellen degeneres every week day at 5 is my key example).

The sooner GEM gets the flick, the better. But that doesn’t seem likely.

  11. Thanks for nothing Ch9! The sooner RL goes to a decent channel the better.
anti-syphoning is a joke when it means 1/2 the country don’t get to see the game at all. As for not rating, big RL games get over 1/2 million viewers across Vic,WA and SA, hardly no interest!

  12. Fox Sports 3 will have the replay at 10:00pm.

As a league fan in Melbourne, this is why I value Foxtel’s service so much. I understand league doesn’t rate terribly high here, but with two extra channels to use for niche programming, it’s a disappointing decision from Nine – especially considering it’s the final.

Now, if it’s the anti-siphoning list which is preventing Nine from airing it live around Australia on GEM, because it must be shown first on the main channel (even if it’s at midnight), then that’s incredibly stupid and backwards, and I hope is changed in the forthcoming legislation.

  13. @Bella – it’s simply numbers (with a ‘$’ in front of them). They will get more people watching a movie in the non-RL states than will watch the game. Fans in any state will watch whether it’s in HD or SD. They won’t lose many by not showing it in HD (ie on GEM). So they chuck something else on GEM for the other people and increase their total audience across all channels.

  14. I don’t know this for sure, but I’m guessing it’s the anti-siphoning list is why this can’t be shown live on GEM. Currently anything on the list can’t be shown on digital channels before the main channel.

  15. I’m not into rugby. But I agree I don’t get it. Why not show it live on GEM for people who like rugby outside of the Eastern States? That way they can keep regular programming on 9 and there’s also GO! to er go to if you want to watch a movie etc.

  16. @Johnjet – it’s nothing to do with the east coast. NSW and QLD get it live because they are the only two states where this will rate well enough. It just isn’t that popular in the rest of Australia.

  17. @johnjet: It will be live in Sydney and Brisbane. This will be the first Four Nations game shown live in Brisbane

Ratings figures speak for themselves. These games simply don’t rate well in the other states, and this Nine (as a business whose job is to make a profit) really doesn’t have much option but to screen these late at night (much like Seven and Ten do with AFL games in NRL states)

Am disappointed that Nine aren’t showing the game live on Gem though. But I’ll live.

  18. @Pooky
Not just Rugby League and Cricket it was supposed to be all sports as stated in a 9 press release.

I notice they also have not been showing the Golf on GEM yet it’s in HD on Fox.

FTA TV and HD in this country have gone backwards since the introduction of 7mate and GEM.

  19. This is why the anti-siphoning list is a joke. When they have the opportunity to show a sporting event the FTA don’t bother to care about anyone else outside of the east coast of Australia.

  20. Midnight replay in Melbourne, Adelaide & Perth. So much for the argument from FreeTv and the Anti-siphoning List about keeping Sport on FTA Tv. Give it to Pay TV to broadcast it Live not in the early hours of the next day.
