The preliminary ratings factor

The ratings figure for The X Factor finale just got a nice little shot in the arm. Now up to 1.83m.

The ratings figure for The X Factor finale just got a nice little shot in the arm.

Preliminary figures for The Winner Announced were 1.63m. But Overnight figures never take into account overruns, which often comprise live events such as sport and some variety shows.

Today the adjusted figure rises to 1.83m.

The original coding had winner announced as a 45 minute programme, but in adjustments it is just 9 minutes long.

Networks can advise the software company Neilsen of overruns and adjustments and they amend the logs and issue them the next day. TV Tonight understands the show did not overrun.

The same strategy is applied to programmes such as Masterchef Winner Announces, and AFL Grand Final broadcasts. But 1.83m will surely look a lot nicer in the end of year figures next week.

Should Seven have coded the original programme as a shorter show? Perhaps. If “The Winner Announced” was simply the moment when Luke Jacobz announced the winner, followed by speeches and a song, it’s hard to see how it could have ever filled 45 minutes of television.

But that’s the name of the game. The show certainly pulled a good audience as it drew to a close, and may yet be renewed for 2011.

Seven will be hoping the audience is keen for its return and willing to sample it a lot longer than 9 minutes. All 1.83m of them.

  1. This “winner announced” business is ridiculous. They already know the peak figure (not supplied to David, as far as I know, but OzTAM subscribers get it), so the average should be the actual average for the whole show, not the averages for parts of the show. Publish the proper average and the peak figure and we all know everything there is to know (I’m not going ot get into the issue of reach). Skewing the “average” like this means you’re comparing apples with oranges instead of with apples. Compare averages with averages and peaks with peaks.

  2. There is no way the numbers on this show could work out. Millions and millions were sunk into both the production and the marketing of it yet it was absolutely slammed by Junior MasterChef.

I’m not making a comment on the creative, but purely from a ratings point of view this should e scrapped

  3. @chris: you propose that production costs were between $2 million & $5 million for the entire series? I’m sorry but you’re utterly deluded. Give yourself an uppercut son 😀

  4. it should stay it did have good tallent on this year would have been up to par with idol season 2 and 3 the judges are good and fresh not sure about luke though but i guess it was a last min choice ( popstars live floped when he hosted it )

  5. 1, 1.1,1.2,1.3 1.4 million viewers every week is good!!
X Factor is a great show which helps undiscovered talent, maybe because your tired of it dosent mean it should be pulled of air. Almost 2 million watched the end result why wouldnt they renew it for next year

  6. Rubbish show for rubbish talent.
    Terrible host.
    Terrible narcissistic judge in Kyle.
Seven has no credibility with these types of shows.
It was $20m for licence fee alone then you add the production costs to it.
No one cares who one and this is seen the lack of hype that show generated. Certainly wasn’t water cooler tv in any regards.

  7. If it were to return for 2012, i would mix up the judges a bit – or a lot! Vanessa Amorosi would be a good mentor, keep Guy he’s good value; substitute Ronan for a seventies or eighties guru (what about Molly? or Farnham – he’s got a great screen persona (he used to host a kids show in the 70’s) and flick the one with Bile, and replace with a garden gnome or a tabby cat – anything with a pulse.
Keep Luke, he is a warm & fuzzy- can u imagine if Master Newton had stayed?

  8. @Rob – Your spot on. People just love to hate this show. Does everyone remember Thank God You’re Here’s price tag for an hour of television? $1,000,000.. And that wasn’t doing great numbers for Seven. Is it really gonna hurt these haters to admit that the show was a moderate success? The show grew fantastically and didn’t lose any viewers.
And to @Dane – you clearly have no idea what your blabbing on about. Idol was doing 300,000 less than The X Factor last year. So The X Factor was a much bigger success.
And in regards to your comment about brands being associated with the show.. McDonalds, Acer and Mazda… They had no problem being associated with it?

  9. @Dane: that is completely incorrect.
@Koverstreet: “months” of sub-1m figures is a complete and utter lie. It went sub-1m like 3 times out of 30 or so eps!! Big friggen deal! If there was such a lack of interest in the show then why would 1.8m tune in to see who won? Why? Come on, tell me! I’m so sick of haters like you wishing that this show would die… Why is it so hard to understand that a lot of people still enjoy these types of shows, and that if you don’t like it, go and watch Masterchef or something? Just cos I don’t watch most of the shows on TV doesn’t mean I hope for their demise!! *facepalm*

  10. The show only dropped below 1million viewers on one occasion a few weeks ago. It was above 1 million every other broadcast, from auditions to finale. Additionally, the purported $22 million budget covered about 60hrs of tv (with auditions, boot camp, home visits, main show and xtra factor) or approx $360,000per tv hour and covered all aspects of production. What do you think the line for pyro was like? Or set design/construction? Or flights and accom for cast and crew on trips to Ireland/LA/New York etc? Catering? Staff wages?

So please, most of you like to spout off and pretend like you have a clue and it makes me feel almost bad to school you like this but the return on investment with this show was quite, quite good for everyone involved. Otherwise….why do it?

  11. Does the same cynical attitude apply to this?
    Junior Masterchef -Winner Announced 1.853
    The X Factor – Winner Announced – 1.830
Congratulations to Seven for spending some decent money and investing in some Australian entertainment. And to the disrespectful sods his name is Altiyan.

  12. @koverstreet That’s a bit rich coming from a 40 year old man whose favourite show is Two and a Half Men. Not to mention you were also a fan of Australian Idol for 5-8 years, what does that say about you?

Generalising makes you look like a ‘dim-witted’ boob, give it a rest

  13. All of the people on here are you kidding? It was barely a flop yeah it didnt pull the numbers channel 7 was expecting but it still averaged 1million plus viewers twice a week! It’s still not poor ratings by a long shot

  14. Why would any brands want to be associated with this show next year considering the poor numbers it’s been doing.

Idol got yanked off the air and it did better numbers than the X factor.

  15. 9 min doesn’t make up for months of sub 1m figures for a hugely expensive show. That 1.8m figure is pretty much what it peaked at…most shows peak much higher then the average. It’s a rubbish show aimed at your average dim witted boob and with any luck we’ll never see it again.

  16. The X Factor should definitely return next year, I like it more than any other Australian series

compared to crap like DWTS and the kid-infested Australia’s Got Talent, its definitely more entertaining and worthy of a renewal

  17. I understand why networks run them as several different programs, but come on. 9 Minutes to announce the winner, and that gets 1.83 million. It’s all the same program. Of course the numbers are high and will rise if you shorten the length because of averages. That’s why 2 minutes of an ad for Winners & Losers rated over 2 million. What’s next AFL coverage being coded into 4 quarters so the ratings look high.

  18. Great to see the last 9 minutes of the show worked… Now if they could only get the other 31 hours to rate.

7 burnt so much cash for very lack luster numbers. They’re is no way they could justify it again. For one all the sponsors would be very wary of the poor performance.

  19. i do hope it makes a return next year. its a much better format than australian idol. the variety of the different groups/genres adds a special element to the show, even if only one group/genre win…

a good mate of mine wants to audition for next year – he has stellar talent. will be very popular if he makes it through.

he could audition for AGT, but TXF will be a better platform i reckon. i love their production values. would love to watch a live show!
