Why did John Travolta really cancel Telethon?

John Travolta's rep now says talk of him flying home because his wife was in labor are "100% false."

First the Qantas planes start to crack, now John Travolta may not have rushed back to the US for the birth of his baby after all.

Travolta was reported to have cut short his visit to Australia, including his planned appearance at Perth’s Telethon when wife Kelly Preston went into labor.

But a report has since emerged denying this.

“This story is 100 percent false,” a spokesperson told People magazine. “She’s not in labor. John is in route back to the U.S. as was always the plan for him to return this weekend.”

Always the plan? That doesn’t sound good.

A spokeswoman for Seven confirmed Travolta’s wife had asked him to return home on Saturday night.

An understanding General Manager of Seven Perth Ray Wardrop said there were “very expensive” ground arrangements in place for the star, including accommodation and travel.

“Whatever reason he had to fly back home to his family is his business and we support him,” he said.

“Family comes first and that’s what Telethon is about.”

He added that reports Travolta never had any intention of appearing were “absolutely not true”.

He did manage to find time to appear at Qantas’ 90th Birthday celebrations.

So will he now join Oprah Winfrey’s sojourn in mid-December? Who knows. With the baby due next month that doesn’t sound optimistic.

Still, nobody can deny Travolta and his family have been through plenty in recent years. Who wouldn’t be wishing them some good news for once?

  1. John Travolta is an ambassador for Qantas of course he had to appear for the 90th anniversary. I am pretty sure that his wife being in labor was the correct reason and even if it wasn’t the reason sounded good and plausible. Anyway all the best to John and his wife Kelly Preston and hope the birth is a successful and healthy one.

  2. when they mean family they mean Scientology, I’m assuming they found out about his appearance at the fundraiser, and since it’s against their beliefs of fundraising money, they told him to go back, and as a result, the Travolta’s made the anonymous donation so they wouldn’t be found out by the cult, but they still wanted to make a contribution to the cause. Well that’s my theory anyway.

  3. Well there were Billboards and advertising all over Perth saying “John Travolta is coming to Perth” and making a big deal about it, so something went wrong. Seven had used Travolta as the major draw for their Telethon so one assumes Seven is correct when they say everything was in place for his appearance. I wonder what reay went down? It now all seems a bit odd.
