Contender champ KOs Anthony Mundine

The Contender champ Garth Wood finally met Anthony Mundine in the boxing ring last night and knocked him out in the fifth round.

It was months in arriving, but last night The Contender champ Garth Wood finally met Anthony Mundine in the boxing ring and knocked him out in the fifth round.

The Sydney Morning Herald has called it one of “the biggest upsets in Australian boxing history.”

It was only Mundine’s second loss in 44 fights.

It had been an ugly fight, dominated by complaints from Mundine about Wood’s wrestling tactics and blows to the back of the head, but when the three-time world champion fell to the canvas 58 seconds into the fifth round there was stunned silence among the big crowd. It appeared that a blow to the back of the head sent Mundine to the canvas.

Mundine had raised concerns about Wood’s wrestling tactics on the eve of the fight, repeatedly complained to referee Les Fear about his opponent holding and grabbing.

The fight was part of the prize package after Wood won The Contender Australia in January, but could not be staged earlier due to injury.

Final Results: Middleweight (10 x 3) Garth Wood (AUS, 72kg) bt Anthony Mundine (AUS, 71.9kg) 5th round KO.

  1. Not a big fan of mundine’s, mainly due to his mouth, But i have to admit, he can fight. He did beat Danny Green, and he is no muppet in the ring. I dare say there will be a re match in the works, as most of the big name fighters rarely sign a deal to fight a nobody, without a rematch clause written in. In case that lucky punch finds it mark.

  2. Mundine complaining? Whats new? Just glad he lost. Maybe now he can disappear and let Australian Boxing recover and return it to something that resembles a sport
