Ian Turpie comes on down for charity

Ian "Turps" Turpie was back amongst the supermarket aisles last night as he hosted a game show charity event.

Veteran game show host Ian “Turps” Turpie was back amongst the supermarket aisles last night as he hosted a game show charity event for community radio.

Turpie came on down for the one-off event for JOY 94.9 after breakfast hosts Andy and Adrian (pictured) campaigned to bring the star out of game show retirement.

Dressed in an 80s suit, Turps hosted games from both Supermarket Sweep and The New Price is Right, in a Melbourne supermarket that especially allowed the event to take place in its aisles after hours.

In between rounds he told nostlagic stories such as filming five shows a night, only to discover by the end of a shoot the meat in the freezer would be rancid he had to tell the contestants not to go near it.

But last night even Turpie, 67, couldn’t remember the theme song to Supermarket Sweep which left him trying to call the show’s composer on his mobile.

These days he can be found hosting Quiz Nights in Maroubra and Dee Why.

Game show fans can “come on down.”

  1. Wow what a fantastic idea. I’ve always liked Turpie – he doesn’t take himself too seriously and has had a good career.

There should more more charity functions like this – I’d definately want to be part of the audience!
