Report: Seven wants to bump Matty Johns

The Seven Network wants to shift The Matty Johns Show from 7:30pm to 10:30pm next year.

The Sunday Telegraph reports today that the Seven Network wants to shift The Matty Johns Show from 7:30pm to 10:30pm next year.

The NRL show debuted with much hope for Seven but attracted disappointing reviews and saw its figures slip. On those figures in the 7:30 slot next year it would be disastrous.

A production source said the proposed move had “annoyed” John Singleton and that it “would not be happening”. The show is produced by Johns and Singleton.

10:30 need not be the only option. The Matty Johns Showwould be well-suited to 7mate -but it would need to take a haircut, which could prove a sticking point.

Another question also hovers over what Seven will do for its AFL entertainment. The Bounce was promised to return for the Finals but was replaced by AFL Game Day: Primetime on the back of the Ben Cousins doco. Will it return in 2011?

Meanwhile Matthew Johns says he has penned not one but two sitcoms (who knew?) including one which looks at the television industry.

The Sunday Tele says he has commandeered Glenn Wheatley to pitch the show to other networks. Can’t wait for that one. Or to put it another way: I can.

  1. I quite liked the Matty Johns Show. It was more a variety show than anything else and with Hey Hey gone we need something like that. They should probably stick it on Mate though.
Seven can forget about The Bounce, terrible everything with that show. Host, panel, skits, was bad bad bad. And no to Game Day Primetime. Hamish McLachlan is terrible and only got the job cos of he’s brother. He should not be prime time.
They need to bring back Talking Footy. A serious panel discussion show. Nine’s Footy Classififed is the best footy show on tv.

  2. Gary – nice try. Johns quit. Nine did everything in their power to keep him, but the goose left.

Disclaimer – I went to school with both of them, and both of them couldn’t count to 100 if they tried.

  3. here are the facts…9 suspended him so as to be distanced by the moral police…johns was shocked that they did this but then used his story for a ratings win with the exculsive interview on ACA…he felt like it was a double standard…he was then told he could come back to commentate for the finals..then they got cold feet …this saw (matty) johns and his brother have a tiff… (matty) johns thought it was double standard over the drug thing of his brother the year before…. 7 are desperate to get the NRL rights off 9 or at least some of the games so Matty and Singo decided to approach 7 and the rest is history…what matty didnt realise that 7 is run by ex 9 people so they are all tarred by the same brush…he will stay at 730pm for the first 6 rounds to see if he improves…then will be bumped to 1030 or 930 on 7mate…you read it here first….

  4. This article the Tele has written is rubbish. The ratings were not that bad. It averaged around 270k in Sydney all year so thats pretty good. Brisbane was all over the shop though but in saying this it did do better than the NRL Footy show nearly every week. So don’t get that.

  5. It would do much better on 7Mate. 10.30pm is too late a timeslot for it, it will get miniscule ratings if they put it in such a dead zone. Agree that Australian TV’s track record for sitcoms is appalling – we simply can’t do them near as well as the Americans and the Poms. Our sense of humour is more suited to skit/review type shows like Fast Forward, Comedy Company, GNW, Spicks and Specks, etc.

  6. I reckon, if Seven want to make a monkey out of Fatty, go head to head on the main channel: i.e extend Matty Johns to two hours and the 9:30 slot, and commit to having no over-run, as in finishing at 11:30pm, not 20min later.

  7. it rated pretty well, especially by variety/comedy standards, and i think still has life in it, but with that comes the problem of what to air in the AFL states opposite it. they can only get away with comedy reruns for so long and the bring the whole target of it down.
just move it to 7mate and air it in all states i say.

  8. 10:30 might be a bit too late for the show, but Seven probably think that they can put in a stronger show at 9:30. Definitely a better idea than the 7:30 slot of this year.

  9. I can’t see it doing well in at 10:30pm slot. The NRL Footy Show starts at 9:30pm (until 11:20pm-ish), and I don’t think people will chnage channels mid show. Personally, I’ve never liked TMJS (only watched the first episode), and watch T(NRL)FS instead.

Oh man I thought I got all the cool presents yesterday 😉
