68th Golden Globes: winners

Glee dominates the TV wins while Boardwalk Empire, Katey Sagal, Laura Linney and Jim Parsons also score -but the Aussies miss out.

Ricky Gervais has wasted no time in dropping the cheeky remarks at the 68th Golden Globe Awards.

With beer intact his first target was Charlie Sheen.

“It’s a night of partying and heavy drinking. Or as Charlie Sheen calls it, breakfast.”

He then launched into a routine on Sheen’s “porn star” bender.

He also dropped a gag about the HFPA accepting bribes. Ouch.

Next up gags about the age of the Sex and the City cast (“I saw one of you in Bonanza“) and famous scientologists who might be gay. No names.

Then there was the ageing Hugh Hefner. “Just don’t look at it when you touch it.”

Then there was the Lost finale. “I’m pretty sure the fat one ate them all.”

The first award of the night went to Christian Bale as Best Supporting Actor for The Fighter -sorry Geoffrey Rush.

Here are the TV wins as they are announced (winners in bold).

Ricky Gervais introducing the next Presenter: “You probably know him best from such facilities as the Betty Ford Clinic and the LA County Police Department, please welcome Robert Downey Jr.”

  1. @ Ellaboo …. thanks … there are heaps of performers and movies that I love. I find it difficult to think of any US comedian that I love apart from one of two like Joan Rivers and Lucy, and I love Brendan Fraser’s comedies. I love most British comedy because it is actually funny and intelligent. Big favs are Little Britain (but their new show Come Fly With Me is not as funny), Allo Allo, Ab Fab etc … Graham Norton is the wittiest and quickest comedian/host in the UK.

Movies??? I have a huge collection of movies but favs are Beaches, Sound Of Music, George Of The Jungle, and there are heaps of excellent Gay drama and comedy movies I love. Then there is the endless list of TV shows i love as well.

Can someone please explain to me what is so good about The Social Network??? I am desperate to know!

  2. Was a great Golden Globes this year. I haven’t seen the Social Network, and am regretting not going.

Well Done to Glee – Best Show, Chris Colfer, Jane Lynch and all the nominations.

  3. The Social Network was one of the most boring and monotone movies I have ever seen … the performances and characters were the same… we walked out after an hour in disgust … it just got no better!

I also cannot stand the sight or sound of Gervais who is extremely overrated. Dave describes him so well … “tasteless, rude and unfunny”!!! Everything he does fits that description.

  4. I’m glad to see Melissa Leo finally being recognised over the last couple of years. I’ve adored her since “Homicide: Life on the Street”. She’s a fine actress.

  5. I’m disappointed Geoffrey Rush didn’t win – he was wonderful in The King’s Speech, but Colin Firth winning made up for it!

The Social Network was a great film, closely followed, in my opinion, by The King’s Speech, but I think The Social Network just had a bit of an edge over it.

  6. @chk chk – I would have thought that you would be a fan of Jane Lynch given that she has featured a number of times in one of your favourite shows. You must have seen her about 100 times by now.

I suppose Ryan Murphy is another talentless “gay” who only received those Golden Globe nominations and awards for “Nip/Tuck” and “Glee” out of sympathy. Sympathy for what? – being less of a person than someone who’s straight?

In future, perhaps you should get an adult to check what you’ve typed before you press “Submit Comment”.

  7. David,

I’m not complaining about Gervais’ hosting – I thought it was a hoot. But even the Washington Post – not given to these things – is antsy:

    washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/content/article/2011/01/16/AR2011011604722.html?sid=ST2011011604889

Social media – Twitter in particular, but sundry blogs – are worse.

Reuters, of course, have a broader perspective.

    Where was he?

    Just saying.

  8. @SwaySlayer, kudos to you for keeping it real. @chkchk, you really need to get out a bit more!

Ricky Gervais was brilliant as host. Loved it. Though don’t know how much work he’s going to get now in Hollywood now.

And cheers to The Social Network for its wins. Hands down best film of 2010.

    1. Hosting was mostly an opening monologue and then a few introductions, so not that demanding. Cheeky gags yes, but that’s why they book Ricky. You get what you pay for. I doubt anyone is genuinely offended. That’s his schtick.

  9. @SwaySlayer I’m talking about the writer/director.. She obviously hates men and without giving too much away Mark Ruffolo’s character gets shafted big time and there was no blame on the other side.

It was an OK movie in regards to the actors and storyline, then they ruined it with the ending.

  10. @Andrew 81. If The Kids Are Alright was just about man-hating lesbians, then The Social Network was just about a nerdy college kid with no friends.

You evidently missed the well-crafted film that offered up a complex, sensitive, humorous and engaging take on the concept of family. I’d wager that only a select few ignorami would share your take on it.

  11. I can’t believe how many awards “The Kids Are Alright” won, that was a piece of s**! Nothing more then a story about an angry lesbian who hates men.

  12. From other forum:

The only other out gay winners I can find are Ian McKellen for a TV movie back in 96/97, Elton John`s original song win for The Lion King, and Alan Ball for his screenplay of American Beauty. David Hyde Pierce, Sean Hayes & NPH only had multiple nominations but never won. The first two also were not out during their shows` entire run.

    So chk chk…no.

Congrats to Chris Colfer, a so deserving winner!

  13. @chk chk. No…you don’t have to be gay or lesbian to win a Golden Globe. You have to be talented, dedicated and make an impact with viewers and critics. This isn’t the first time they’ve both won awards. In fact, Jane Lynch has been sweeping her category at every awards ceremony since Glee began. So you managed to be uneducated and ignorant on two levels.

Props to Ricky Gervais for his hilarious opening monologue. No one else would ever have the cojones to rip into Hollywood the way he did. My “Rick for the Oscars” campaign starts today!

And Laura Linney, it’s such a shame you weren’t there to collect your award because you are Amazing on The Big C.
