At last, an Oscar embrace for Jacki.

Beloved actress Jacki Weaver, who has appeared across Australian film, TV and stage, has finally been nominated for an Academy Award at the age of 63.

She may have slept through her own nomination, after attempting to stay up all night, but actress Jacki Weaver has finally been nominated for an Academy Award.

Weaver, 63, has landed a Best Supporting Actress nomination for her matriarch role in the Australian film Animal Kingdom. It is the first Oscar nod for the beloved Australian actress who has appeared in Australian film, television and stage productions across her long career.

She received the news from former husband, Derryn Hinch.

“I nodded off just before they announced my nomination so I didn’t know until I got the text,” Weaver laughed.

Weaver will compete against Melissa Leo (The Fighter), Amy Adams (The Fighter), Hailee Steinfeld (True Grit) and Helena Bonham Carter (The King’s Speech) for the gold statuette. Leo has already beaten her on two occasions.

Fellow Australians nominated include Nicole Kidman (best actress for Rabbit Hole), Geoffrey Rush (best supporting actor –  The King’s Speech), producer Emile Sherman (best picture nominee The King’s Speech) Shaun Tan (animated short film – The Lost Thing), Kirk Baxter (film editing – The Social Network) and Ben Snow (visual effects for Iron Man 2) nominated.

The King’s Speech dominated with 12 nods including best picture followed by True Grit with 10.

  1. @Tim In addition to dave’s comment, it’s worth noting film studios will deliberately hold over films that they think are likely Oscar contenders until the last two-three months of a year, so that they might be fresher in the voters’ minds.

As a result, Australia will sometimes start getting those films in January and February, which we are seeing with Black Swan, 127 Hours, The Fighter and True Grit this year. Even The King’s Speech, Winter’s Bone and The Social Network only came out here at the tail end of ’10.

  2. Congratulations Jacki!! Such a phenomenal, terrifying performance from her in Animal Kingdom, blew me away. I’ve seen her in quite a few things on stage and she is always superb. Truly deserves this honour!

  3. Outstanding good news, but I thought this blog was ignoring Aus film related news and was a TV one. Last time I checked, the overrated AK film was a movie, not TV.

    1. Joe: you do realise how many television shows Jacki Weaver has done right? To have this kind of global nomination for her acting is more than worth acknowledging here. This isn’t the first time there has been crossover of mediums. The Oscars are also on Aus TV.

  4. Yes, i ‘m really thrilled for her – i recall watching her in the early 70’s when she was a panellist on light ent programs on the ABC – her impish sexyness was infectious, and then to watch her in seminal Aussie films and stage shows – what a survivor, and what a road to the Oscars! She won’t win, but that is an amazing crowning achievement after some 48 years in showbiz. She is the best thing about the film.

  5. I’m just thrilled for Jacki Weaver – deserved nomination from a brilliant film. And not to mention Geoffrey Rush and Nicole Kidman (though I’m not a fan of hers, but apparently her role in The Rabbit Hole is wonderful). And lastly, a local Perth guy who’s receiving deserved acclaim, Shaun Tan, nominated for best director of a short animated film. Whoo hoo!

  6. So Very proud of this lady.
Saw her on stage with Peggy Mount in Sydney years ago when Jacki was actually pregnant (secretly!)
Every appendage is crossed for a win.
    Break a leg, kid.
