Here are Seven's plans for the Brisbane International, Medibank International, AAMI Kooyong Classic and Australian Open.

From today Seven covers the Australian Open series tournaments including the Brisbane International and Medibank International in Sydney, as well as the AAMI Kooyong Classic in Melbourne.

Seven’s summer of tennis will be headed by Johanna Griggs, Matt White and Hamish McLachlan with Bruce Mcavaney in the commentary chair plus Jim Courier and Sam Smith.

Joining them in the Channel 7 commentary box will be Todd Woodbridge, Gael Monfils’ coach Roger Rasheed, Henri Leconte, Nicole Bradtke, Rennae Stubbs, Sandy Roberts, John Fitzgerald, Allan Stone, Peter Donegan and Kerryn Pratt.

Of note, Perth viewers do not appear to get Men and Women’s finals at the Australian Open live.

  1. Has channel 7 not heard of LiveTV? Why oh why does the evening sessions need to be delayed? In WA that means going on the net to get live scores way before the braodcast even starts! Move Home and away to the other 7’s for the duration of the Australian Open.
Also why persevere with Jim Courier- do they not read all the complaints viewers list about these so called commentators, in particular his ‘lame’ comments with the victor after the game.

Pay attention to what your viewers are saying!

  2. Agree @billy ray valentine

It’s ridiculous that TV has gone backwards sine the advent of GEM and 7mate.

The only HD I see now is on Pay TV.

Everyone buys HD TV’s and I saw this article earlier theherald.com.au/news/local/news/general/no-highdef-for-ashes-cricket/2007927.aspx

“At least 76 per cent of Hunter households have converted to digital TV, with 60 per cent using a HD-capable digital TV set.”

Ging off those stats the main channels should be HD, not the multi channels watched by a handful of people.

  3. i think all stations should have 2 HD and 2 SD channels

HD can be primary channel simulcast + another genre channel
    (eg 7 + 7mate; 9 + GEM, 10 + one)

and SD can be primary channel simulcast + another genre channel
    (eg. 7 + 7two, 9 + Go, 10+ 11)

  4. Well said people. Seven is at the pit of thrash in televising tennis and its soooo Amazing that they find it so hard to improve on it.

ONE/Ten has been doing a great job covering the Hopman Cup. Adequate amount of commercials and good presentation overall. They have definitely shown their credibility.

  5. I know the Hopman Cup is shown on One HD, but I’d hardly call the pictures they’re giving us High Definition. If anything it looks like an upscaled SD picture. In fact, the production values are just about the exact same as what it was when it was on the ABC (only difference is the sponsors integration on a commercial station)

It would be nice to see 7 at least make it look like they Want to show it live into the non-AEDT states. But what would they do that for…!
Aus Open finals – the biggest sporting events for the month and again, WA will have to wait a couple of hours for the match.

  6. Ok from the new rules of the anti siphoning list this is what the deal is:

*The Brisbane International, Kooyong Classic and the Medibank International aren’t on the anti siphoning list which means they can be broadcasted on other channels e.g. 7two and 7mate.

    * This is the confusing part with the Australian Open. The singles for men and woman are on Tier B. This means they can also be shown on digital television on 7mate and 7two but they don’t have to be. The only exception to this is the final which has to be shown on the main 7 channel.

*The other point of all of this is that their is no rule stipulating “that everything has to be live.” So unfortunately for all of us this means 7 can do what they like.

So in conclusion Seven can put most of the matches on other digital channels for the duration of the Australian summer but will they… Well I’m not holding my breath.

  7. I think Tihsamikah is right on the money. People, after watching the Hopman Cup, not just live in all markets, but in HD, are going to expect the same from Seven.

I reckon Seven is too scared to reschedule news in some markets to allow for live coverage, due to the fact, Ten’s news evolution will debut during the second week of the Oz Open.

  8. I thought that with the new rules they had to show the australian open live. I still can’t beleive that Brisbane gets all the night sessions delayed by one hour. I’m glad I don’t live in Perth where you have to watch all the night sessions on a 3 hour delay.

  9. @Matt.

I too, was expecting Tracy Austin to be on the commentary team but alas, she was missing. Though according to her page on Wikipedia she is contracted to the US tennis channel since mid 2010, so I am guessing she was unavailable to do commentary for Seven this year. I know she isn’t everyone’s cuppa tea with the American accent, but I got used to her covering the ladies night matches.

  10. i wont be tuning in for 2 reasons:
    1) im sick of being bombarded with ads for cougar town, desparate housewives and my kitchen rules. it seems seven is more interested in promoting its programs than it is in the actual event itself, thus being the only reason they actually broadcast this event. we even have on court promotions and promotions via the commentators.
    2) even with digital channels, perth viewers still miss out on live telecasts. can’t 7two screen a live telecast and then a delayed broadcast in primetime on 7?

  11. i thought they put the schedule up for the flogging of their shows. you know the nightly hour of lets flog a rubbish new show to dilute the viewing public.

@Matt. no one thinks he is talented. he is the new tom williams on the network. over exposed idiot

  12. No sign of Chris Dittmar this year ? Could be a good thing!

I like that Bruce will be in the commentators chair, always enjoyed his commentary during the Australian Open and was disappointed that he had only “hosted” the coverage in recent years.

Will have to wait and see if these new broadcast guidelines will have an impact on the networks coverage. Going by the last 5 or so years, where they squeeze in as many commercials as possible (including their sponsor segments) and we would usually miss the opening game(s) of the televised match as a result.

  13. If only 7 used 7Two or 7mate to broadcast other matches of the Brisbane International and Medibank International. It is my understanding these events aren’t on the Anti-siphoning so they are able to do it, they are just silly and don’t. They could at least show the night session on digital channel, as for the first few days 7 shows no night sessions, then starting Wednesday it is shown delayed at 10.30pm.

  14. hmmm….. I thought changes to the anti syphoning list made it so sports could be shown on the digital channel this year???

Gee looking at those times for the night sessions, ppl are going to be quite pi**ed after seeing the hopman cup live to every market on one HD.
