Californication…. the “other” F word

Heads up Californication fans, TV Tonight brings you a scene from an episode which is yet to air in the United States -but be warned.

Heads up Californication fans, TV Tonight brings you a scene from the third episode of the current series -which is yet to air in the United States.

And in a show that is notorious for offending viewers, it may cause ripples for dropping the F word. The “other” F word.

Karen (Natascha McElhone) takes pity on Hank (David Duchovny) after thinking he made a suicide attempt.

She begs him to contact her next time.

“You call me, you text me, you Skype me, you Tweet me, you can f***ing Facebook me, I don’t care,” she says. “Nothing should be that bad. Ok, you promise?”

“Well texting is for fa***ts, but I promise,” says Hank.

Ouch.

It airs in the US on Sunday and on ELEVEN next Tuesday at 10pm.

WARNING: language.

  1. The word is offensive but I think that it’s certainly in keeping with the character of Hank Moody. If we want some of our shows to be “real” (and I do) then we have to accept that some of the characters will behave badly (both in word and action) some of the time. There are so many others aspects of Hank Moody that we could get up in arms about – his fornication, abuse of alcohol, use of illicit drugs, lackadaisical attitude, etc, etc – why pick on this particular one?

It’d be wrong (or at least cheap and lazy) for a writer to just chuck this word in a script for a laugh or it’s shock value but, if it’s within context, I think it’s acceptable.

  2. You can just see the writers sitting around patting themselves on the back going ‘oh we are so clever and witty and out there’ – uh no, just outdated and offensive.

You must be very limited as a person if this is the best word you can come up with.

  3. Is it really necessary to censor “f***ing” and “fa***ts” in your story when you go ahead and post a video where those words are said uncensored?

  4. Being a reader of this site for 4 years, this has got to be the most frivolous story I’ve seen on here. Go! aired the movie Good Luck Chuck yesterday, and guess what? They used the same word! *shock horror*

    1. I post plenty of frivolous stories Richo.

It always surprises me that people presume every story I post is major headline news. Some are merely reactions, observations, thoughts and musings -all in keeping with a personal blog. But offering a clip to readers before it has aired in the US is worthy of a Top Story (as I have done before).

The F word still divides people as comments here illustrate. As noted Hank’s character has offended many in the past, so nobody gets off scot-free. Trust me, if I was going to beat the drum on whether it should or shouldn’t have been used, I would have gone in a **lot** harder. Read the copy again. It’s an observation. Viewers can decide for themselves….

  5. It’s offensive to me. It’s no longer acceptable to use the “N” word to describe African Americans, as is calling indigenous Australians “a**o’s”, so why continue to use this derogatory term for homosexual men in the media????

    Just stop using it.

  6. Dislike. Yes that word is offensive. I absolutely hate that word, and i’m disgusted when gay guys even use it. My own brother called me it the other day (in a text go figure) and i don’t really want to speak to him again that’s how much i hate that word. Fa***t is a gay slur and never acceptable. If it’s gonna start being used off the cuff like this then that’s a really sad thing.

  7. I can’t see the need for censorship (ie: ***) of the word fa***t in a journalistic story or the following comments. Too much political correctness applied in my opinion.

I find Hank’s comment to be in context for his character and believe its meant to refer generally to all men who don’t fit his image of a real man, either straight or gay. The writers could probably have used a better line but then this discussion wouldn’t be taking place and hopefully creating more interest in the show!

  8. I wouldn’t have even noticed it. Is that word really considered a big deal now? Why create a new stupid taboo when we’re just getting over another one? It seems that people never stop searching for something to whinge about.

  9. I really like this show but i think it reflects badly on the writers.

Whoever wrote the script obviously was trying to be funny/edgy/outrageous but it comes off as unnecessary. That word is a slur just the same as the slur for black people and the slur for Jewish people ect.

    But hey that’s just me

    *rant over*
