Despicable Me in 3D

To mark the 3D movie Despicable Me on TV, Foxtel is giving away 30 Samsung 50” 3D Plasma TVs.

Foxtel is claiming an historic first with the first 3D movie to screen on Australian television.

Hmmm I seem to remember watching a 3D  film, I think it was a western, by wearing red and blue glasses during the 1970s, along with a Three Stooges episode. And that was definitely on TV. Anyone else recall?

Despicable Me will air on Foxtel On Demand from Thursday, January 27 as a pay-per-view movie on to subscribers who have a Foxtel iQHD[1] set-top-unit connected to a 3D capable TV.

Executive Director of Sales & Product Development, Patrick Delany said, “Now families can watch a Hollywood studio movie On Demand and in 3D on their 3D TVs. Despicable Me 3D is another addition to Foxtel’s existing 3D services including our dedicated 3D linear channel, Channel 201, that regularly features special event programs screened in 3D that began with the first 3D broadcast of the Socceroos v New Zealand on May 24, 2010. This is another opportunity for our valued iQHD subscribers to experience quality 3D content in their home with a 3D capable TV.”

Despicable Me 3D will be available at $7.00 for a 48-hour viewing period or in 2D version for $6.00 and in Standard Definition for $5.50 from Thursday, January 27.

Foxtel is also giving away 30 Samsung 50” 3D Plasma TVs plus a set of 3D glasses, each valued at over $2500. Subscribers can enter the competition by connecting their internet-enabled iQ or iQHD set-top-unit to the internet and activating Foxtel On Demand between  January 27 and February 25, 2011.

  1. David The 3D screening on TV was of the 50’s western Fort Ti – about 1981 or 82. I remember watching it !! Would be interested to see the stats on the takeup of 3D TVs by the Aussie public . Too expensive at the moment for me and not enough product to justify it

  2. Anyone else over this whole 3D thing, I saw Avatar in 3D and while good nothing really jumped off the screen at me. And I’ve seen the demos in shops but seriously until they have better systems without the need to where glasses I don’t see the point. I’d rather have super clear full 1080 HD and not the crap Nine is trying to pass off on GEM which is often blocky and worse than SD or analogue.

  3. I too remember 3D movies on tv. I vaguely recall them being those retro 50s scifi/horror movies though. The Blob or Creature from the Black Lagoon or something similar. And it definately would have been the early 80s, or I wouldn’t have been old enough to watch it.

Has anyone gotten an email about this from foxtel? I swear I hear everything about foxtel via tvtonight. I’m a bit confused about what “foxtel on demand” is though. If I go to box office I can order “new release on demand” movies. I’ve been able to do that for over a year though. Are they talking about the “movie library on demand” or something else? Does it cost any extra?

  4. Yep. Remember it also, Watched it with some friends at a mate’s place. Much Hype – pretty rubbish to watch actually, Though I too, would have said early eighties.

  5. David I remember it also! It was in the early 1980s. I’m sure of this because I taped it on our first VCR-a betamax!! Unfortunately it did not work so well on replay. It wrked well enough when it aired though. I think it was on channel 7. From memory you had to buy the glasses from Pizza Hut.

  6. Another reason to hate Austar. I have had a 3d tv for a while now and enjoyed watching some tennis on Austar in 3d, but then the channel disappeared, they didnt want it. I am sick of being treated like I am a country hick, I pay for a service and that service is increasing in price, but definetely not in value. Country viewers obviously (by fta and Austar) dont want 3d. I am glad I can get all my 3d content from the web, including the latest 3d movie releases. Austar is going bye bye in my mouse, I have had enough of forking out over $100 a month for crap. If I cant have a decent service like Foxtel I would rather just use BT and FTA
