Glee tops Elvis UK chart record

The cast of Glee has officially become the fastest ever act to score 20 top 40 singles in the UK, surpassing Elvis Presley.

And they’re only in their second season….

The cast of Glee has officially become the fastest ever act to score 20 top 40 singles in the UK, surpassing Elvis Presley, who took 88 weeks to achieve the same feat back in the 1950s.

From their first hit, the 2010 cover of Journey’s ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, to their 20th hit -the cover of Britney Spears’ ‘Toxic’, the kids are unstoppable with British fans.

Martin Talbot of the Official Charts Company said: “The success underlines just how popular this TV show has become – as well as emphasising how digital downloading has transformed the consumer’s engagement with music. The Glee cast are superstars of the digital music age.”

The Glee cast has racked up three top ten hits – ‘Don’t Stop Believing’, a ‘Halo/Walking On Sunshine’ mash-up and Bonnie Tyler classic ‘Total Eclipse Of The Heart’ – plus three top 20 smashes.

Over two million Glee singles have been sold in the UK, while the number stands at 13 million worldwide.

A new episode airs on TEN next week while America is getting ready for the much-hyped post Super Bowl episode.

  1. @ NPS, yes, but have they sung an original song? No. Elvis had to write his own songs, okay he might not have written every single one, but they were Elvis’.

It’s hardly a comparison, Elvis, who has stood the test of time, the guy is dead and making more than half the living music industry…

When Glee makes it by singing songs from say Bing Crosby or Sinatra or Fitzgerald, Without making it into some crappy RnB remix, and make it to #1 faster than Elvis, That is when we can congratulate them. Re-singing a bunch of the last 2-3 years’ number 1 songs is hardly called for “Records”.

  2. Not as embarrassing as your spelling, John! Glee has done more for the music industry in the last 18 months than any artist has for a long time. Not only in their own sales, but for the artists who originally recorded the songs who are seeing a boost in their sales and a renewed interested in their careers. This is why the biggest artists from Elton John, Billy Joel, Coldplay, Madonna, Lady GaGa and more welcome a Glee cover of their songs and some even allow them to do so without charge.

    Go Glee! Great performers.
