That New Zealand version of Underbelly is going ahead after all.
The idea for a Kiwi version was floated last September when Screentime admitted it was in early talks with TV3.
NZ On Air has given $3.9 million for six one hour episodes that revisit the Mr Asia syndicate.
Underbelly NZ: The Land of the Long Green Cloud, will be scripted by expat John Banas, New Zealand-based and cover the Marty Johnstone story. Terry Clark was convicted of Johnstone’s 1979 murder in England. He was played by Merrick Watts in the Australian series (pictured).
An American adaptation is also in the works for the Starz Network.

@Secret Squirrel, I’m wondering if that umlat above your i gives you away as a cuzzie from across the ditch?!
@secret squirrel – no I was saying that as quite a lot of the the New Zealand drama i have seen has been better than quite a lot of the Australian drama i have seen.
Ellaboo’s going straight to Hell! 😉
Actually, I thought it was going to be called “Underbilly: The Land of the Wrong White Crowd”.
Will they do really bad Aussie accents as payback for Matthew Newton’s attempt at a New Zealand one?
@Ben Tree – do you have some inside knowledge or are you just making a statement based on nothing other than a desire to put the Aussie version down?
NZ version will be better than the aussie version. Guaranteed.
its a jingle out there bro 😉
it should be interesting, I like the idea. its not overkill, all those crimeshows are. a US and NZ version I’ll watch, Underbelly is the best thing to come out of Aussie TV for a while. why is it the best, cause other countries feel the need to copy us like they did Kath and Kim.
overkill!! Enough is enough!!
