Sound Relief 2 to Queensland’s rescue

Nine raises over $10m for flood victims as a second Sound Relief event is announced.

Entrepreneur Michael Gudinski last night announced Sound Relief 2 would be staged to help the victims of the Queensland floods (and hopefully WA floods too).

He announced the charity benefit live on Nine’s Flood Relief Appeal: Australia Unites.

The first Sound Relief, staged in 2009, saw two mammoth rock concerts staged in Sydney and Melbourne for the victims of Victorian bushfires and 2009 Queensland floods.

Nine’s live appeal raised $10, 278, 552 at the close of its broadcast, hosted by Eddie McGuire, Leila McKinnon and Karl Stefanovic.

It may have finished 90 minutes late, but the event attracted celebrity names to its phone room while performers including Tina Arena, David Campbell and Kasey Chambers provided the entertainment.

Nine News reporters gave live crosses from several towns that had been inundated by the floods.

Politicians, CEOs and charity execs were also part of the line-up at Brisbane’s Suncorp Piazza, which itself fell victim to the relentless weather.

The Flood Appeal follows Nine’s bushfire appeal in 2009.

A date and venue for Sound Relief 2 are yet to be announced.

  1. I watched it and it was good to see the money raised. I didnt think eddie promoted afl to much. he had Jonathan Brown on and mentioned the afl and afl qld donated money but he also had Darren Lockyer on as well and mentioned the donations that the broncos and nrl made. I hardly heard him mention afl again. Eddie actually got some money raised himself when he told his corporate mates to kick in. I even thought Leila McKinnon was ok even though I dont watch weekend today.

Yeah they promoted there shows especially rescue special ops but that was only for a minute. I didnt see the point of a spelling bee contest between Emma Freedman and Steve Jacobs though.

the music was good and the funny comment of the night was when Allison Langdon said Karl was about the same height as Justin Beiber because a girl in the crowd wanted Justin to sing then jokes about Justin were made.

Anyway it was all about helping these poor people of qld who have lost houses, stock, cattle and possessions. Also its good they acknowledged WA nd NSW problems to.

  2. junior number are up every year FJ. look outside the lions. with tv ratings. look at what time the games come on on friday nights. haryau. good for lacrosse. typical comments from someone that has probably never watched a game of afl. aflbj getting thosands of kids starting up every year. one club in brisbane has garunteed 600 kids signed up every year. if don’t want believe that fine. if you think it isn’t popular, you have your head in the sand

  3. Good on them for raising so much money, but having said that, what a shocking production the whole thing was. Eddie promoting AFL and Nine shows every chance he got. The so-called celebrities in the phone room were treating the whole thing as a staff party. Strange choice of venue too, couldn’t they have found somewhere indoors to do it ?

  4. Great to see a large total raised, i hope that it will be put to good use and not end up buried in “red tape”. I know it was an opportunity to highlight the situation, but it also had a hint of a cheap plug for channel 9’s own interests (ie: their personalities and their respective shows… rightly so i guess since it wasn’t a multi channel event).

What i also found interesting was that i saw several moments where one of either Eddie, Leila and Karl was about to lead off with a sentence… yet another would take charge (usually Eddie). I take this as all 3 being used to piloting (being the main person) of their respective show, and not settling in to it being a multi-host situation.

  5. @Mr. chandler

No idea why you want to turn this into an argument. But if you’re going to talk nonse then I have to respond.

Just ask the Brisbane Lions lions.com.au/portals/0/lions/newsletters/m091113.html

“We’ve only converted 642 junior members from a total of 29,260 Auskick participants in 2009. ”

“Lions matches consistently finished 5th or 6th in Queensland’s TV ratings behind the NRL Footy Show, the NRL Sunday Roast Show and the Broncos, Titans and Cowboys matches this year. “

  6. Mr. chandler says:
So are Lacrosse’s participation numbers are up every year. So what.
Vicball has/is/never will be part of the QLD culture. Deal with it, game over.

  7. I thought there were several strange moments David!
Like Leila saying were she gets all her meat from, while Karl’s mind went a million miles an hour about that.

The clearly unlikeable tension between Eddie and Karl(a)

And probably the most so the reference to Peter Harvey no longer being with us….umm..i know the bloke is boring as grass grow but well ..ummm

  8. I flicked it over when Eddie started using at as a way to promote AFL. How low can this bloke go? Did he know it wasn’t about his favourite football ?
AFL isn’t even bloody popular in Queensland for christs sake.

  9. As a Victorian, Queensland you were their (as well the rest of the country was) for us when Victoria had the black saturday bushfires in Feb 09, helpin us out when we needed it. So its Victoria’s Turn to say thank you for your help and its time to give back to Queensland. I was so glad when i heard that Ted Baillieu (Premier of Victoria) donated 1mil to Queensland

  10. 7 would do the same. but instead of attracting real stars like 9 did. we would get their over exposed talentless mediocre personalities to put up with all might

  11. To Dan: I have family and friends in Rocky who have now been isolated for over 3 weeks and they are not complaining. They are thankful that people actually give a s… Does not matter who did the telethon or even if it was hosted by Humphrey Bear the fact of the matter is money has been raised to assist all those in Theodore, Emerald, Rocky, St George and all the many other little towns and others. Some of those in these areas do not even have television, had no Christmas or New Year whilst I am sure you were comfortable in your cave. Be thankful mate that at times of disaster, networks and Australia came to the aid. Your area could be next. Happy New Year!

  12. I’m with you, Dan. Don’t be foolish enough to think Channel 9 did this to raise money for the flood victims. It was merely a ploy to attract viewers. And as for the “worthy” presenters, maybe if they donated their weekly wage to the victims, we’d have slightly more belief in what they say

  13. i thought it was a great event. karl was his usual idiotic self. 9’s always quick to get these things together, 7 always waits don’t they. they’ll try and get in on this as well no doubt

  14. i read from some other forums that Eddie everywhere basically turns the telethon in an 3 hour afl commercial. True/untrue? Very odd considering that vicball is as popular/wanted in QLD as the Floods are.

  15. @Dan, go back to your cave where you belong. Good on Nine for raising that amount of money. Back to Dan, go back to your cave and hopefull it gets flooded.

  16. Nothing was appealing about those hosts, 5 seconds while channel surfing was enough to hurt my eyes and ears. Channel 9 needs more likeable people on their network. Karl, Leila and Eddie need to quit TV and go and crawl under a rock to be never seen again! oh and please take Peter Overton and Shane Warne with you!!
