TEN Evening News: your reviews

It's a mass review task as TV Tonight readers review each of the state-based 6:30 bulletins from TEN.

From tonight TEN will roll out state-based Evening News bulletins at 6:30pm with different presenters in each city.

So TV Tonight wants opinions on how each of them fared.

There’s nothing like the internet for pooling together resources. Tell the rest of us how the bulletin performed in your state: presenter, technical, story mix, live crosses, did it tell you much the national 5pm report didn’t, did the set differ at all? Include a brief comment on 6PM with George Negus if you like.

And how many stars out of 5?

Please note your city / presenter at the top of your Review.

Try to stick to around 200 words.

This post will open for Comments from 7pm AEDT.

  1. yes those to towers in the backdrop are only halfbuilt
i knew that i hadnt seen them before
i like the 6:30 news cos i dont often see the 5pm news
the beeps i like gives it more of a news tune
and the new weather grapics are the best ive seen Anywhere
    there great

  2. Perth
5pm News: I like new presenter but loved Narelda and Tim’s banter more. Perth City backdrop is a little off-putting with unfamiliar building. Is that actually built yet? I like the new weather graphics, but please get rid of the annoying beeps in the News theme. I’m glad to see I’m not the only person who finds them annoying. News content good though – 3/5.
6pm: I like George so quite enjoyed it. 3/5
6.30pm Local News: Same as 5pm news – just a re-hash. I feel bad for Narelda. It’s not her fault coming at the end of an hour and a half of news, but the content is just a repeat and I tuned out and turned over. I’d like to see her back at 5pm.

  3. Perth

Craig Smart (2nd week on the job, I think from memory). I agree with Dave the beeps are damn right annoying.

Quite like the set and not sure if its just me but the colours seem a lot brighter. Though agree with the other Perthie’s and think the back drop is a bit weird. It seems to be more towards West Perth instead of the “classic” centre picture of the city.

It was a bit weird crossing to Narelda Jacobs in the “news room” to tell us what was happening at 6:30pm.

Didn’t watch Negus but caught a bit of 6:30pm Evening News. There was maybe one or two stories that didn’t make the 5pm news, but otherwise thought it was ok.

    3/5

NB One thing I did notice when looking at the EPG was that there’s no 5pm news for Perth on the weekend it now seems to be at 6pm local news. No more news read for Perth from the Sydney studio.

  4. I’m not sure I’m a fan of this kind of post. I think you should keep to your own reviews instead of asking for ours, after all it is your blog. It just seems a bit Media Spy-esque, in fact Ben’s review below is actually identical to one on Media Spy.

  5. Adelaide
the girl between 5-6pm looked like Lindsay Lohan. Apart from her, there was no real difference.
6pm with George. It wasn’t bad but I wonder how much control is being placed on him. I was expecting him to be a bit more in-depth. I also wonder how long it will be before he is made to cover the more tabloid stories?
630pm:I really like Rebecca Morse but it was a rehash on what I had already seen between 5-6pm and what I had glimpsed on 7 and 9.
By 730, between all the channels, I felt overloaded with news. Most of it I didn’t need to know. I love the news but I don’t think we need pointless stories for the sake of filling a timeslot.

There was another surprise on 7 News (Adelaide) last night. They revealed a new News set. I thought I had stepped in to a Cold Rock ice-cremery. Did anyone else notice the new set?

  6. Perth: Narelda Jacobs
Ok first off 5pm: 5/5New set for perth 5pm which looks more professional and new presenter craig is already warming to the job and audience which is great.
6pm: 5/5This is great!! I loved the stories and the set and i look forward to watching daily now.
6.303/5 The evening news was dissapointing. Liked the new set ( same as 5pm)
and i love narelda jacobs but i didnt like the content. There was nothing special in it that i didnt see at 5pm news. needs alot of work on the stories they use and they shouldnt be telling us stuff from 5pm, maybe at the start have a quick recap of todays news in like 1min then find other stories to use. There are stories our there Ten just needs to find them.

  7. Perth

Magically had the new BHP Billiton building in the back drop which in real life is half built or about 3/4 done…. Will report back on set to 5pm news but I believe same presenter… Different outfit?

  8. Beeps are annoying. To me Sydney’s set looks too much. It reminded me of my child’s pre school with the cut outs of the countries around the wall. The yellow bar is too distracting and looks messy. 6.30 set looks good by the national set is horrid. Washed out big projection needs to go and same story with the glass panels.

  9. Sydney:

It wasn’t bad at all. I thought it was a good start. Its too Blue for my liking though. The 6:30pm bulletin was a fair bit like a shortened version of the 5pm news and overall it could do with a few tweaks here and there especially as it contained a lot of Sydney stuff. I thought it was supposed to be NSW based content so that dropped my rating a bit.

As for 6pm it was ok. I didn’t overly enjoy it even though i like George. The PM interview disaster. Sorry but at the moment its the weak link and if its to even have any inroads into Seven and Nine things need to improve. Sure it didn’t have the fluff Seven and Nine dish out on TT and ACA but there is a lot of improvement needed before then.

My ratings out of 5 for each. Obviously they need a bit of work but so did the 7pm Project and look at it now.

    5pm: 4/5
    6pm: 2.5/5
    6:30pm: 3.5/5

I think it will take a solid 3-6 months to get this right just the same amount of time 7pm took. Once the kinks are ironed out i really think this could start making a solid impact on the top guns.

BTW Seven Adelaide has unveiled the new Seven News set due to be released soon in other states. It looks quite sleek from the images i have seen.

  10. It is only the first day so a little hard to predict what will happen but what will Ten do this time around should 6pm with Negus and a 6:30pm News tank. They might have to go to an American Sitcom or make some home grown comedies to fill the hole but give it time like they did with 7pm and it can do better. These days Only the ABC unless you have Pay TV offers a 6pm alternative to News services.

  11. You get the feel that as with the majority of these comments, 6pm certainly has potential. My 2 cents worth is that George certainly has an infectious warmth about him and it was a solid start. They’ll build on this. I see it as a definite alternative to us Gen Y’s, as we’re pretty much well informed of the headline news stories and looking for topics with abit more substance to generate conversation about (though somehow I don’t think we’re the demo that TEN is aiming for). As for having Gilliard as the first interview, can this woman be any more uninspiring to a nation? 4/5

As for 6.30 – just a recycled version of 5pm. Note to TEN. In this day and age of unlimited technological applications/features, why do you continue to persist with a still background and el cheapo graphics of Sydney harbour. I’m sure with the $20 mill spent on News, you could’ve invested a few dollars on a camera for a live feed overlooking somewhere, anywhere. 4 words – get with the times! Take a leaf out of the European broadcasters; premium looking graphics and studios which makes for a slick broadcast. TEN needed to reinvent itself as a brand tonight. Golden opportunity with curious eyeballs watching. It missed. 1.5/5

  12. @Jeremy: Not everyone gets home in time to see the 5.00pm or 6.00pm news bulletins. So for those people they can see the news at 6.30pm so yes there will be stories that have already been shown at 5 for the benefit of those that get home that little bit later.

  13. Melbourne, hosted by Mal Walden

Although they installed new muzak and sets (only for the 6:30pm News), I found the 6pm with George Negus and the 6:30 News so boring it made me switch it off!

I found the 6pm disappointing since there’s not enough analysis and information, but too much talking, not as promised as the ads say! 2.5 / 5

I also found the 6:30 News boring, simply because Mal Walden repeats some of the news stories already said for the 5pm one. 3 / 5

But this will be quite handy if I miss the main 6pm Seven News bulletin for some reason, so I can be informed! WHy would Ten install 2.5 hours of news every weekday, do we need more news?

  14. 5PM News (3.5/5) – Craig Smart
Other than the new Theme and Studio, the 5pm bulletin in Perth, was no different in format than from previous bulletins. Didn’t really like the new theme sounded like a radar beeping.

6PM (3.5/5) – I found that 6pm format was like more serious version of 7PM. 2 Crossovers for a preview of the 6:30 Evening News. Different Story headlines used rather than repeating the same ones like on other networks. George did look a little lonely in the studio once Kath had mentioned the headlines. One highlight I did like was that George ask Corporal Robert-Smith if he was Sh*t-Scared.

    6:30PM (2/5) – Narelda Jacobs
Brain switched off after 10 minutes as most stories that were in this bulletin was repeated stories from the 5pm bulletin. Also found that it was a 5PM bulletin condensed to 30 mins, and that only 2 new stories were mentioned, even though they advertised as News from a local’s perspective. If this is going to continue like this, they might as well move the 5PM bulletin to 5:30, move George to 6:30 and then straight into 7PM and do away with the 6:30pm Evening news.

Overall I feel that the addition of 6PM is a step in the right direction and will take time to evolve into something great like 7PM. They could really do away with the 6:30 Bulletin.

  15. Brisbane – Bill McDonald

I live in the Northern Territory but we get Qld news here.

I liked the presenters. I thought the news was very informative and well presented. The set looked very fresh and I liked the modern feel to it all. I think most people will stay with either 7 or 9 though, just because they are use to tuning into those stations at that time but I think 10 have a much more professional approach to the news now. 4/5

6PM – reminds me of what A current affair use to be, which was classy current affairs TV, so I really enjoyed a current affairs show that is actually about current affairs and not the fluff that 7 and 9 are now offering. 4.5/5

I really hope 10 sticks with this regardless of the ratings, for the first year at least. Please ignore the ratings, I think that they aren’t a proper reflection of viewing habits, we need a new rating system which reflects all of Australia.

  16. Perth one has began
i like the new set and the background but does anyone know where those 2 towers came from never seen them yet??

it mostly the same news stories getting repeated for people who havent seen it at 5pm
    i like jacobs clothes too
i will maybe tune in too this if i ve missed 5pm news
and i like the set much more and the theme music is better
id love to know where those 2 towers in the backdrop came from too
livecross and cameras all seem great too i like good job ten
    4/5

  17. Brisbane:

New set: can easily win set of the year in 2011, marked improvement from what was the oldest news set still used by any station in the country, I’m giving it a 6/5.

Content: improved, especially for 6:30, and lived up to the promise: Local news will succeed, if the content’s right. 4.7/5

Bill McDonald: Will he have problems handling two bulletins a night? Only time will tell. 4/5

    Overall: 4.5/5

  18. Melbourne-

    5pm:
    -Liked the rejigged set
-Good story selection, although it was a pretty quiet news day locally

    6pm:
-Must admit, didn’t get to see it.

    6.30pm:
-Mal’s a pro- interesting mix of stories
-Good decision to have some national content- given many people may not have seen 5pm
-Couple of minor technical issues- missing audio for a brief second, etc, but that happens with any bulletin every so often.

A really good start- I think it’ll be a slow burner- start of smallish and then ratings will grow.

  19. Melbourne: Mal Walden

I enjoyed watching the news. I agree with the other comments about the set being very blue – but it’s just different, not bad. I thought the on-screen graphics announcing the story were quite nifty. I thought I heard a few swooshes when they came on and disappeared – which were slightly, but not overly distracting.

I felt sorry for the poor flood reporter guy… Think nerves may have gotten the better of him best.

    3.5/5

6pm: I enjoyed it. I thought parts seemed rushed and other’s relaxed. Negus definitely has a unique style and I think it will be something which I’ll turn to… It feels like an in depth news show.
