TV Tonight Awards: Cops LAC “Worst” of 2010

Readers have voted Nine's axed police drama as the year's worst show. But who are the personalities that are a turn-off?

Cops L.A.C. was the worst Australian show of 2010 according to TV Tonight readers.

The drama was voted the worst of the year by a landslide vote, with Kate Ritchie also polling strongly in the Worst Female category (in contrast to her winning the Favourite Female award in the 2007 awards).

But ultimately it was Melissa Doyle who took out that category for the third year in a row.

Meanwhile Kyle Sandilands, who was voted Worst Male in 2008 for Big Brother, has now taken the title again for his work on The X Factor and Australia’s Got Talent. But it was a fight with Eddie McGuire who was again voted Most Overexposed Performer.

US zombie series The Walking Dead is the show readers most want to watch. Who is going to pick this show up, please?

  1. Maybe because I am only 18, but I do watch Ten the most out of the free to air networks.

In 2010, Channel Ten shows that I watched regularly were: Rush, Outrageous Fortune, MasterChef Australia, Junior MasterChef, Offspring, Modern Family, Glee, Burn Notice, White Collar, Go Girls, House, Merlin, The Good Wife, Undercover Boss, Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation, The 7PM Project, Law and Order: SVU, Medium, Raising Hope, Bondi Vet, The Biggest Loser, Californication and Married Single Other.

From Channel Seven: Brothers & Sisters, Desperate Housewives, Parks and Recreation, 30 Rock and The Amazing Race.

From Channel Nine: Underbelly: The Golden Mile and Survivor.

From ABC1: The Gruen Transfer/Gruen Nation, The IT Crowd, United States of Tara, Spicks & Specks, Yes We Canberra! and the Librarians.

From SBS: Skins, Big Love and Luke Nguyen’s Vietnam.

And it’s not like I don’t know there are good shows to watch on other channels. I don’t think it’s a generation thing. My age has nothing to do with the fact that I like Channel Ten.

  2. Re: TEN winning.

I’d say there are two very strong voting groups – young males & everyone else.
If the everyone else vote splits, the young males win.

Got nothing to base it on really, just observation.

  3. This site must have a lot of Ten fans. Are they all in shock at the abysmal ratings?

Can’t understand why anyone would even watch Ten. Worst FTA channel by a long way.

  4. David – if you look at the demos, especially in individual markets, GO! has beaten Ten, especially in primetime. So not inaccurate at all. Look at Adelaide and Perth for example.

  5. No surprises with 2.5 Men, it’s a terrible show and most people on this site have some taste, but the bogans love it. Can’t believe Glee, Raising Hope and Cougar Town are in there. Cops D.U.D easily worst Aussie show.
Poor Melissa Doyle, she really isn’t that bad.
Ten keeps winning because Nine is just crap, and Seven continues to disappoint and get worse so Ten gets the vote.

As for new shows. The Walking Dead is brilliant. Misfits also should get a mention cos that show is awesome. Along with Hawaii Five-O and Blue Bloods but they’re both starting on Ten soon.
S#it my dad says is woeful, who voted for that? It should rate well with 2.5 Men;s viewers though so i expect it to be a hit.

  6. The reason 10 wins is because it trys to be different. Shows like MC, Generation and 7pm are the kind of shows that 7 & 9 generally wont try. Remember a few years when 10 dumped the sunday night movie and put on SVU (from memory) and it rated extremely well and then 9 swapped CSI to sunday night.
I voted for 10 because they try things and stick to them longer than 7 and especially 9.
I am about to turn 50, so the demo of teen to 35 doesn’t apply here !

  7. @Jason Whittaker
Commercial TV is largely Not for the thinking person.
When, for example, I scourge 2.5men at the pub there are only a few muted grunts of assent. Most punters think it’s hilarious, fresh and fantastic and think that 2.5men haters are intellectual snobs with no sense of humour. That the opposite might be a possibility never occurs to them.
Which is a clear sign that Australia has become the 51st state of the USA.
Which has been the plan since the mid-1980’s.

  8. Ten might be considered a ‘popular’ network but this doesn’t translate in to viewers. It is the number 3 network and sometimes even number 4 (behind GO!). I think 11 is over-rated and no different to GO! or 7Two/Mate. 11 has a great marketing campaign but this wont translate in to millions of viewers. Neighbours on 11 wont be any better than Neighbours on 10.
As for Eddie – what was he even on in 2010? Hot Seat and the IQ Test. That’s hardly over-exposed. People just love to hate I guess….
What these awards also show is that TV Tonight readers don’t necessarily reflect the viewing habits of Australia – or that the current ratings systems is extremely flawed.

    1. Jay Jay: TEN has never trailed GO! that’s completely inaccurate.

Some time ago I also pointed out the challenges of comparing networks with 2 channels to those with 4. ELEVEN should help address this, but it won’t happen overnight.

  9. i think grant denyar should have won the most over exposed talent. the rest is about right accept for the worst international show. cougar town was terrible

  10. I guess we shouldn’t be too surprised by Ten’s success. Ten does well with the younger demographic. The same demographic likely to respond to an internet blog.

  11. The vile Two And Half Men is regularly recognised as one of the worst shows on TV. And rightly so.

So who the hell is watching it? It rates well! Own up people! You have to hate it and Not watch it for it to disappear.

  12. If we look to some of the winners yesterday there were a number of shows from TEN and Seven, so it isn’t surprising they were first and second for favourite network.

Eddie McGuire has won Most Overexposed for both years the category has been run (2).

  13. Without doubt, Cops LAC was the most inexcusably woeful Australian drama since The Strip, so it deserves to take out the title of Worst Australian Show this year.for 2010.

  14. I can’t believe Ten won best network. Is it because we expect more from Seven and Nine and that’s why the continue to disappoint? It can’t be because Ten is actually good. I agree that against all odds they do reality very well, but they’re essentiall a one-trick pony and fill their entire schedule with whatever their current reality hit is. What’s left? C-grade sitcoms.

  15. Well I think kyle is an asset to both of his shows. They need someone that speaks before they think that has good one liners. Best decision AGT ever made.

out of 8 digital channels ONE couldn’t make the top 5? I think we’d be better off without it but I thought it had some fans.

  16. Go! was the best digital channel in 2009. In 2010, Gem has diluted Go! with Conan, Friends, etc showing on Gem.

7mate was the surprise of the year IMO, in terms of the amount of fairly new, quality shows on there.

  17. How is Cougar Town in the running for Worst Show international? Stupid Channel 7. I call it ‘worst promotional campaign for a show that is a thousand times better than it’s title and ads suggest’.

  18. It is generally agreed that Nine got lucky with Underbelly – we all know Eddie Maguire forced it on the network after pitching into the network hiimself over the years. Without it Nine’s drama department has made one crap drama after another – as bad as it was COPS LAC is way better than Canal Road. The question is can Nine get anything right this year?

  19. Good on Ten.
I prefer Ten to all the other original channels & don’t even bother with the “new” ones. But i can see by their lineup that 11 will be a clear winner for them.
Ten needs a little fine tuning, possibly a new 2 night a week variety show hosted by Angela Bishop. But i do think the 2 & a half block of news will be a bit much.
I’m good after 1 hour a need a little light entertainment after 6 & thats where UKTV comes in!
