British actress Susannah York, best known for her film roles in They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? and Superman (pictured) has died, aged 72.

An actress in both film, theatre and television, York died in a London hospital on Saturday after being treated for bone marrow cancer.

Her son, actor Orlando Wells, said said she went into the hospital on January 6th after experiencing shoulder pain, but never complained.

Her career blossomed in the 1960s and early 1970s, including an Oscar nomination for the 1969 film They Shoot Horses, Don’t They? She also starred in Tom Jones, A Man for All Seasons, The Killing of Sister George, Battle of Britain, Oh! What a Lovely War, Superman II, Superman IV, and Australia’s Eliza Fraser.

She appeared in dozens of classic films and on stage in a career spanning half a century.

On the small screen she appeared in Ruth Rendell Mysteries, The Love Boat, The Two Ronnies, A Christmas Carol, Casualty, and Holby City.
