AFL promo loves ripping off NBA

Seven's 2011 promo for AFL is a dead ringer for TNT's 2010 promo for NBA.

  1. Apart from being acomplete useless rip-off…

The NBA verson is actually candid.. the AFL version is scripted and the players sound like complete douchebags..

  2. oh david come on you know how it is done . why bother making your own promo when u can just pinch and copy some one elses. australian networks wouldnt now
originality if hit hit them in the side of the head with a base ball bat.

  3. I got rid of Foxtel because of the repeats & promo’s of their own shows but i hope Foxtel can offer viewers a reason to get foxtel reconnected again. If their have a package deal on AFL which is cheap i might reconnect

  4. I dont mind when an idea is hijacked by another Network as long as its a good ideas in the first place. Anything original and good will always be the best no matter what comes after it. & Network could have done a whole lot more with it. THe fact that the promo which 7 did was just under a minute and the TNT promo was almost 2 minutes shows how slack the team at 7 are not only cant they create something original but they cant even replicate a promo from the states. the states gets critisised for alot in the world but their sports telecasts and Tv productions are the best in the world no disputing that. The Networks here could learn a thing or two about how to produce sports telecasts and promos. For the record i like Network Ten’s AFL promos the best.

  5. OK may not be “original” but i like it nonetheless. Is it better to have a proven winner or a brand new crappy thing that Seven/TEN/Foxtel have spat out in previous seasons?

  6. What a joke. Sport is the easiest thing to make a promo for. They’e missed most of what is great about the NBA by limiting themselves to a reflection glorified by music. NBA so much better than AFL.

  7. i dont really care whether they got permission or not but ireckon its pretty funny how even the the minor details are the same like the hexagons and film strips and even the first line. Though Abletts line in the AFL one is pretty good.

  8. I actually really like the graphics of the TNT NBA broadcasts (Fridays on ONE HD). Hopefully 7/10/foxtel can use some of their presentation techniques for this year.

  9. David, the headline of the story is pretty emotive/accusatory. Just wondering whether you checked before publishing whether the content/concept hadn’t been licensed from the copyright holder of the NBA promo, or whether it was an assumption that they simply “ripped it off” because they look so similar?

If it’s the former then fair enough, they deserve to be called out. If it’s the latter then are you not on shaky ground for making a seemingly uninformed accusation? Whilst it’s clearly a recycled idea and execution, if they have licensed it, then it’s no worse than artists doing covers or remixes of a popular song.

  10. In defense of the afl, they invented everything. In fact it’s thier 50th year coming up for the game that was invented in Parramatta. So cut them some slack or face being written out if thier retroactive history!

  11. @ DansDan,

The comments I would be scratching my head at would be yours. It simply just doesn’t make sense. How can Australian’s taking down Channel 7 for ripping off TNT ‘tall poppy syndrome”. Between your half baked ideas and bizzare insults to other posters.

In my opinion which each Marketing Campaign TNT used Channel 7 has hunted down and asked them to do a similar campaign. Both of which seem effective. This practice has most likely been happening for 30 years and we notice it much more now because we live in a Global Community where everything is on YouTube.

  12. well said “DansDans”! ffs get over it people, very little is original in todays world, and really… what Is the big problem anyway? get over it, and move on – now, let me get back to my youtube so i can get some more inspiration 😉 😉

  13. despite how common this apparently is in tv land, using the excuse that “everyone does it” does not make it right. It’s fine to draw ideas and inspiration from other people, but copying their work down to the smallest detail is lazy and offensive – at the very least. It’s frowned upon in all other industries, why should people in television think it is fine? It’s acceptable if it was done by the same person/company. If you think this is fine you’ve probably never had an original idea in your life.

  14. why cant 7 come up with their own material. same goes with everyone else. but 7 are the worst culprits. everyone knows that and it’s blatantly obvious

  15. I really see no problem, as TNT are not an Australian tv channel, there is very little likelihood that any significant portion of the Australian population has ever heard of TNT and even less likely to have seen this ad. If someone pays that much attention to an ad to be bale to say that it is a rip -off then that person really needs to get out more.

  16. @DansDans: companies take intellectual property very seriously. If I was the creator of that ad and I saw someone rip it off then I would be pretty peeved. Essentially its an ad, so if Coles copied Woolworths advertising style I’m sure a lawyer would be on the phone. Plus how can it be Tall Poppy syndrome? Isn’t the NBA and TNT bigger than the AFL and Channel 7? lol so who are we cutting down?

  17. Some of the comments here are truly pathetic. I wonder if half of you even have a brain at times….

“surely TNT can sue” – and what makes you sure that the idea was originally event TNT’s? Maybe the borrowed it from a Euro soccer league? Or Asian sports league? What makes you THINK that permission from TNT wasnt sought for this?

Do some of you people even think before you write? This is TV land, not software piracy. Organisations and agencies pay royalities and rights for everything, and get permission for everything – especially in TV land.

@Rob – so what if some “25yo promo producer” whipped this up in After Effects – it shows that person has far more talent than you.

David, these comments here are the worst example of Tall Poppy syndrome that Australians are famous for. Truly disgusting – I know its not your fault over the comments people choose to submit, but surely even you are scratching/nodding your head over them….?

  18. All networks do it and well thats how this industry is. Nine copies stuff from others, so does TEN. Sorry but despite the blatent rip off thats how it is these days.

  19. The thing that annoys me is that Seven were part of the legal action with AFACT against iiNet over copyright infringement of their intellectual property but then think that it’s ok to make this second-rate rip-off.

Perhaps the AFL players would have seemed cooler if they had massive diamond-stud earrings like most of the NBA guys.

  20. Surely TNT or the production company who made the NBA ad can sue the AFL or Channel 7? Unless they got permission or the same production team did it for them, then this is grounds for a payment of money.
