Airdate: Surviving Yasi

Updated: QTQ Nine will air a half hour special on Cyclone Yasi and the aftermath.

Updated: On Saturday at 6:30pm QTQ Nine will air a half-hour special on Cyclone Yasi and the aftermath.

It’s Queensland’s worst weather catastrophe in living memory. Now, off the back of a devastating flood crisis, a weather-weary State is rallying together to confront the aftermath of this disaster. Garry Youngberry explains how our fiercest cyclone formed and progressed and how unprecedented preparation has been the key to survival. Plus Andrew Lofthouse will have the latest on how north Queensland is coping after bearing the brunt of this monster storm.

This special will air in Brisbane followed by a half hour Australia’s Funniest Home Videos.

After Seven provided rolling coverage on Wednesday, yesterday it was Nine’s turn to devote its programming to the aftermath, along with ABC and SKY.

Meanwhile Sunrise aired live into NZ for the first time.

  1. “I want there to be some sort of catastrophe that just affects media people.
Does that make me a bad person?”

No, that makes you a good person.

I would like a Tsunami that only wipes out only Mel, Koch, Grant Denyouraloser, Karl “IQ sub 200” Stefanovic, the whole of ACA & TT staff and all other ambulance chasing media.

  2. I recorded it on WIN and they screwed it up, the last ad break they went to Funnest Home Video for a few seconds before the screen went blank for a good minute, coming back to the show mid sentence during an interview. Amateur hour on WIN again!

The Seven Floods/Yasi special was much better IMO.

So how long before the networks make an epic disaster movie or mini series?

  3. Saw a clip of a Nine newsreader wandering the streets of Cairns trying to find any sort of damage to use as a backdrop, evidently annoyed that the cyclone had missed him but still cutting to dramatic film of himself ‘bunkered down’ in the 5 star hotel ballroom the previous night.
That’s like my playing film of me waving a towel out of my Brisbane hi rise office window the day after 911 to show my shared experience with Twin Towers victims. The biggest disaster experienced by the journos in Cairns was when the minibar was emptied by 8pm with eight hours of broadcasting left to do.

  4. This is just a rushed attempt by Nine to try to make up for the pathetic coverage they had on Wednesday and the fact that Seven News have a look back at the floods at the same time might have something to do with it.

  5. Look i could understand if this was shown in a few weeks time when the cyclone had actually ended but to air 2 days after is so wrong. Its just not right imo.

Good to see Sunrise has branched out too. Beats Today any day. Love em or hate em they know how to bring us the goods when required.

  6. While I do appreciate that these amazing stories of survival need to be told, I’m finding it increasingly distasteful how the commercial channels are climbing over eachother to show that They have the clips/images of the cyclones that portray the maximum damage.
