Lowdown sells to UK

Adam Zwar's comedy about a tabloid journalist has been sold to BBC4.

ABC comedy series Lowdown has been sold to BBC4.

The 8 part series, starring Adam Zwar as a tabloid journalist under pressure to deliver stories, aired on ABC1 last year.

It also featured Kym Gyngell, Julia Zemiro, Beth Buchanan and narration from Geoffrey Rush.

Sue Deeks, Head of Programme Acquisition at the BBC said, “Lowdown enters the world of tabloid celebrity with wit, warmth and bite – it is a very engaging mix and perfect for BBC Four’s savvy viewers.”

Co-creator and director, Amanda Brotchie told TV Tonight, “It’s every writer-director’s dream to have a show on the BBC and we’re absolutely thrilled that Lowdown has found a home there.

“There’s quite a few things that we hope a British audience will be able to hook into, such as the tabloid world, the cricket and Doctor Who obsessions and the general sense of ridiculous that underpins the show. For us, this amply makes up for England retaining the Ashes.”

Adam Zwar added, “When I was a kid, if God had said to me, ‘Adam, unfortunately you will never play cricket for Australia, but you will be co-creator of a comedy that will screen on the BBC,’ I would have happily taken it.

“But I really wanted to play cricket for Australia.”

  1. Sad really, the first few episodes of this show were truly cringe-worthy, not funny at all (oh God, that long, laboured and very unfunny anal crevasses routine in the first episode!) It did improve a bit as the series wore on, the last couple of episodes were even amusing in places.

Still, I can think of shows that would give the Poms a much better impression of Australian humour than this mediocre effort. :30 Seconds springs to mind, it was much funnier and more intelligent than Lowdown, why it failed and Lowdown succeeded is a mystery.
