Marngrook Footy Show shifts to ABC

Another community television show has been picked up by one of the big guys.

ABC will air AFL football show Marngrook Footy Show which has aired for four years on Melbourne’s Channel 31, and on NITV. The show began as a radio show in 1997 due to the lack of indigenous football commentators, before joining on National Indigenous Television in 2007. It also airs on Foxtel, Aurora and Prime networks.

The show has an emphasis on Indigenous players, history and culture and includes information on the teams for each round of the AFL, match previews and live music.

Marngrook Footy Show’s rotating panel includes such names as Grant Hansen, Alan Thorpe, Gilbert McAdam, Ronnie Burns, Chris Johnson and Glenn James.

It also features female reporters Leila Gurruwiwi and Shelley Ware.

From Wednesday, March 23rd it will air at 7:30pm on ABC2 before moving to Thursday nights.

The meaning of Marn Grook translates to ‘Game Ball’.

  1. So glad the grooker segment was quicken up – it was the only slow point of the show. Love it!
Keep improving. when will Paul Kelly be singing?

  2. Cheryl & Keith Kaulfuss

Congratulations to everyone involved in Marngrook. The program leaves the other ‘footy show’ for dead – keep up the great work. Seems to be another case of ‘from little things big things grow’!

  3. Armchair Analyst

This is great news finally a AFL show with a focus on the indigenous perspective of the game considering their have been indigenous footballers since the 60s if not earlier. This is also great vindication for community tv and radio and we should keep it alive because that is where the creativity is coming from not the commercial networks. Remember Rove McManus came from commercial tv.

  4. Fabulous news I love the show and rarely get to watch it on c31, now hopefully iview will stream the show so I can catch it on Friday’s before the weekends games begin. Visibility is vital in the battle to infiltrate the mainstream with different and voices.
