Rebecca Gibney has a new project in development for the Seven Network.
TV Week reports Gibney and her production designer husband Richard Bell have been given the green light to develop the concept by the network.
“We are in talks with them and we have a writer on board,” she told the magazine.
“It’s going ahead. If and when Rafters does go away, we‘ll have something in the pipeline. Even if Rafters doesn’t finish, we will do it after Season Five. It’s a drama, and I’m thrilled.”
And why wouldn’t Seven give her the go-ahead? When one of your biggest stars fronts up with a new idea, any network would be crazy to kill it stone dead.
It’s good to see stars taking the lead with project ideas. Last year Lisa McCune indicated she too was interested in a bigger role in Production.
Bring it on, ladies.

Can only just imagine the sort of fluff she’d be creating. No thanks!
Good on her. Claudia Karvan lead the charge and look at the shows that have come out of it – Love My Way (which I believe is the best Australian drama created in the last 10-15 years), and Spirited, which is a breath of fresh of air content/story wise.
Neighbours is horrible at the moment.
@ jack
i doubt rafters will ever last as long as neighbors, it’s about the rafters family, how many stories/characters can you reuse before you know its time to let it go. would rather have a good show end on a high than be taken off air due to decline in ratings.
re: this story though, will be good to see some more home grown stuff!
There is a good history of “stars” taking more control over their output, particularly on the ABC with Librarians, Kath & Kim, Chris Lilley, Rake etc being great examples. As long as the networks just don’t greenlight anything to keep their stars happy, and then give them proper support, it would seem to ensure these shows have the commitment necessary. Claudia Kavan is another great example of how well this can work
Good on Rebecca, i am a huge fan of her. I love her on Rafters and she seems like such a wonderful person, i wish her and her husband the very best of luck in their project.
Hope this doesn’t feed the crazy rumours that this is the last year of Rafters!
what does she mean by? “we could do it after seven five”
I hope she’s not thinking of leaving. I want Rafters to continue as long as Neighbours has done.
