No sign of the Next Great Leader

Remember that talk of a "Political Idol" style series from SBS? It's been crossed off the "To Do" list.

It’s not uncommon in this biz for TV shows to be put on the drawing boards and never eventuate. Sometimes we are left scratching our head thinking “whatever happened to that show?” because you just never hear about them again.

One such such show that bit the dust before it ever got before the camera was the Australian version of Canadian reality series, The Next Great Leader, which was to be an SBS project.

The original series put five finalists through a series of challenges designed to prove why they should lead the country. It had offered a cash prize of $50,000 and included three former Prime Ministers as panellists.

It sounded just like a “Political Idol,” no doubt looking to engage youth in political issues.

SBS picked up the rights to the show in October 2008, to be produced by dSP Beyond.

But SBS advises the project actually fell over some time ago. A bit like a few pollies have.

That’s a shame. Would have loved to have seen Paul Keating as one of the judges.
