The shows they really want

What are the shows network programmers would love to cherry pick from their rivals?

TV Tonight recently put a question to 5 Free to Air Programmers, asking them to nominate a programme from another network they would like to see on their own.

Some had trouble narrowing it down to just one show. But here are their answers.

Brendan Dahill, ABC1 Channel Controller: Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation (TEN).
“Because it’s a great show that appeals across the generations, it has a really entertaining vibe about it, and it reinvents itself every week, brilliantly. Shaun Micallef is a fantastic talent.”

Jane Roscoe, SBS Network Programmer: Hung (Seven / Showcase).
Also nominated The Inbetweeners (GO!) and Misfits (ABC2) and from overseas The Amazing Race Asia, Wife Swap India.

David Mott, TEN Chief Programming Officer: Packed to the Rafters (Seven).
Also nominated Top Gear (Nine).

Tim Worner, Seven Director of Programming & Production: NRL (Nine).
“I just think there’s so much that Seven could do with that sport.”

Michael Healy, Nine Director of Television: MasterChef Australia (TEN).
“Or Hawaii Five-0. And I wouldn’t mind Rafters.”

This concludes this series of Programmer interviews.

  1. @DansDans – hilarious and probably true!!
But you left a few more out:
    * Film the players only from the waist up tennis-style to avoid offending wowsers
    * Edit the 80mins of play to 47 minutes to squeeze in ads after each set of 6 tackles
    * Kochie to conduct ‘boundary rider’ interviews and give stock tips at inappropriate times
    * Little Leyton Hewitt to provide colour commentary
    * Grant Denyer to do intrusive Skype-crosses live from the shower room

I have no love for Nine but I’d hate to see NRL go to Seven.

  2. i think it’s time 7 changed the name of my kitchen rules. they should rename it to. this is the very ordinary copy cat version of come dine with me

  3. @ Jerome… How on earth are Ch7 the ‘kings’ of reality TV. Think about all the Major reality programs of the last decade… which station were they on…. I think you’ll find 7 doesn’t even come close to being King..

    Just in the last year…
X-Factor failed (yes failed, it wouldn’t have made a dime.)
MKR is woeful, just woeful. A complete rip off of Come Dine with Me with MasterChef-esque production values. (and I say esque through gritted teeth because they are nowhere near as good… and that voiceover should be taken out the back and shot by Leckie)

I really hope your King of reality doesn’t eff up The Amazing Race, because that is a great show.

  4. I think those shows would go well on SBS. Don’t think NRL would suit 7 but 7 are the kings of reality so MC might. TBYG I could see on the abc. Pttr I think can only be on 7.

  5. i would actually Love it if SBS screened The Amazing Race Asia! that is sure to be a ratings winner!! 😀 Season 2 is my favourite season out of all the amazing racers! Best!

  6. 7 want every sport on their network to themselves. Don’t know how they’re going to go when they have to 1 Friday night game live with the nrl

  7. See what happens when you steal an Olympics away from Seven, they go and get your number 1 sport. That big red seven is not looking so big though these days, watch out Nine.

  8. Hmm – lets see what Seven could do with the NRL:

    * not show it
    * show it at 3am in the morning
    * delay live broadcasts so they end 20 mins late
    * cut out the club songs
    * insert ads in wierd places
    * onsell all the rights to Fox Sports
    * advertise Packed To The Rafters all the way through it

He is right! There is A LOT they could do with it…. *sarcasm*

  9. Tim Worner – Epic Fail.

“I just think there’s so much that Seven could do with that sport.” – like what you’ve done with the AFL right? No HD. No live games. 1980’s graphics. Cancelling complimentary programs to support the game after 2 shows.

How about Seven actually does something with what they’ve got first.

  10. Ahh so ABC2 got Misfits. Great show.

And hell no Seven wanting NRL. As much as i hate Nine, and their failure to show NRL in Adelaide at a decent time, Seven should not be allowed sport Ever. AFL, tennis, motor racing, rugby union, Olympics, they suck at all of them, get the same complaints each year but nothing changes. Wish all these sports were given to Ten/ONE

  11. I was right about Ten and Nine. I totally forgot about Talkin’ ‘Bout Your Generation but that makes sense for ABC. SBS must be trying to completely ignore Top Gear even though it still hurts that they lost it. Looks like Seven is already making a play for the NRL rights when they next come up for negotiations.
