Airdate: Cloudstreet

Showcase's highly-anticipated miniseries, Tim Winton's Cloudstreet, will premiere in May.

In May Showcase will premiere the new Australian miniseries, Cloudstreet, based on the modern classic by author Tim Winton.

It will air as 3 x 2hr blocks with an ensemble cast including Stephen Curry, Essie Davis, Emma Booth, Geoff Morrell, Kerry Fox, Todd Lasance and Hugo Johnstone-Burt.

By the look of some of the stylish production stills, this could just be the return of the Australian miniseries, folks.

Set in and around Perth during the 40s and 50s, cloudstreet tells the story of two rural families who suffer separate catastrophes and flee to the city to pick up the pieces of their lives and start again. Brought together in the same house at No.1 Cloud St, the Lambs and the Pickles’ share numerous tragedies and triumphs that draw them closer together, until the roof over their heads becomes a home for their hearts.

During the years of World War II, bad luck robs Sam Pickles of the fingers on his right hand and the Lambs’ youngest son is left brain damaged through a near-drowning. But Sam Pickles inherits a huge house in Perth, and when a further run of bad luck leads him to rent one half of it out, the Lambs become tenants in No.1 Cloud Street.

It premieres Sunday May 22nd at 8.30pm on Showcase.

  1. showcase first launched on Foxtel on December 1 2007, as a premium channel, airing shows, uninterrupted (aside from when transititioning between shows) and watermark free! It should remain on the Showtime Movies package until November 15, when it should move to the Drama & Lifestyle package! It s run by Showtime’s CEO Peter Rose and it launched two additional channels: showcase two and showcase HD on November 15 2009!

  2. Tim Winton’s original novel is, in my opinion, one of the best to ever come out of this country. I’m really hoping they’ve done the novel justice, and if the incredible trailer is anything to go by, it looks like they may have actually pulled it off.

  3. Neon Kitten,

Showcase is basically Australia’s HBO equivalent with a a lot of shows from Showtime and HBO and a few local quality productions. Yep just like you said there’s no ads (aside from when transititioning between shows) and there are no watermarks.

  4. The trailer shows that this one’s got the look of pure premium-cable quality about it. What a shame I can’t get Foxtel here.

Does “Showcase” air their premier shows HBO-style – without ads and watermarks – by the way?
