Airdate: Million Dollar Drop

Eddie's new game show will premiere next week at 8:30pm Monday, the traditional slot where Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? proved so successful.

Nine’s new game show Million Dollar Drop, hosted by Eddie McGuire, will premiere next week at 8:30pm Monday, the traditional slot where Who Wants to Be A Millionaire? proved so successful.

The show takes the place of the Eddie McGuire-hosted This is Your Life, which is a series of specials in 2011.

Nine also indicates it follows new Two and a Half Men episodes at both 7:30pm and 8:00pm -burning off the last of Charlie Sheen while $#*! My Dad Says rests?

Based on the highly successful UK format, The Million Dollar Drop is a drama-packed game show that keeps contestants and audiences on the edge of their seats. Two contestants work as a team to take on one of the most difficult challenges of their lives – keeping One Million Dollars in real cash, tantalisingly stacked up in front of them as they begin.

Each team must face eight questions which have optional answers – and get eight answers right to win up to $1 million.

For the first question, they have to risk the entire $1 million. They can plonk it all on one answer, or spread it over three of four options. If they get this answer right, they go on risking all their money on subsequent questions until they reach the eighth and final one.

There are only two optional answers for the last question. In a sudden-death decision, all the cash remaining has to go on one answer. If it’s correct, the contestants take home up to $1 million.

The Million Dollar Drop is a high-stakes heart-stopper full of nail-biting tension. To add to the drama, money placed on wrong answers disappears literally before the contestants’ eyes – plunging down the Money Drop.

Eddie McGuire will take the reins of this gripping one-hour game show which is produced by Southern Star at Docklands Studios in Melbourne.

“There are a lot of shows these days that offer the chance for contestants to work their way up to a million bucks, but this is the only program where the participants start with a million in cash, right before their eyes,” McGuire said.

“If they play their cards right, they walk away with one million big ones. It’s as simple as that.”

The set for The Million Dollar Drop is one of the largest ever constructed for a game show in Australia, filling much of the 950 square metre studio.

Contestants are perched on a deck four metres off the ground. The audience is elevated even higher, with the top row of seating a vertigo-inducing 5.4 metres high.

It took a team of 65 workers 10 days to assemble the set, which weighs in at more than 12 tonnes.

Eight security guards are on set at all times during filming, keeping a careful eye on the $1 million.

The Million Dollar Drop is now broadcasting in more than 15 countries, including the United States, France, Germany, Italy, Poland, Russia and Israel.

  1. Well certainly wont be watching this. Why does Eddie meathead have to do this show also. Surley they have someone more talented. This guy is Channel Nine himself. Get off and give other people a chance to make something of themselves. So sick of seeing his ugly face.

  2. Didn’t they make another Eddie McGuire-hosted game show at Docklands – 1 vs 100?

  3. surely they could have used someone other than Eddie everywhere to host the show. What about Amber Brown when she is not on Postcards or Charli Robinson former hi 5 presenter or better yet brought back Ed Phillips for this role.

  4. I was going to watch this, but I won’t miss Conviction Kitchen for this. Have heard from people who were at the taping that it’s not that good anyway.

  5. Only think that put smile on my face was the bodyguard in the prom pic with Eddie! Wish that hottie was hosting show……..oh l can dream lol

  6. I’m surprised that they only made 3 eps of TIYL. Seems like everything is short term this year. Live From Planet Earth was only suppose dto run for 4 weeks but was cut short at 3. They only had 3 weeks of Underbelly movies and then 3 weeks of This is Your Life. Now is it only 3 weeks of this show too? Why does Eddie do all the Millionaire shows?

  7. So is this another variation of Millionaire or a completely different show?

  8. Kinda surprised ThisIYL made 3 eps.

After all, didn’t 9 go on record when they finished the previous season with “we’ve run out of people of importance”?

  9. I also noticed that Eddie is not shown on any of the promos for This is your life and Million Dollar drop. I reckon that by not showing him, nine are hoping people won’t be turned off before they even tune in. I am positive that if This is your life rated better it would have a longer run than three episodes but by not committing, nine at least save face by saying that it was only a special event. I think the same will be for million dollar drop!! Have nine thought about dropping Eddie down the chute instead of the money, that would be sort of worth watching.

  10. CatFan – If this episode goes to air the annoying contestant ever could be an Australian one. It may be sometime before it goes to air though if it actually does infact air. From what I have been told I’d be suprised if it does even air, I think this show will be another axing waiting to happen for Channel 9.

    We will wait and see!

  11. I’m surprised that after all the fuss and publicity over This Is Your Life that they only intended three ‘specials’. Surely TIYL had the potential for more than just three?

Nine needs to focus on some long-term programming not stunt programming like Warnie or 3 eps of TIYL. Or shows like Million Dollar Drop that have one-week-wonder written all over them.

    1. I had noted in the story TIYL is specials. My understanding is that the eps that have been recorded will have been played by the end of tonight.

  12. So This is Your Life was only three episodes? Does that mean tonight’s episode is the Terri Irwin one? I haven’t heard of any other celebrities who are scheduled to be on the show.

To be honest, I think that Nine aree doing this all wrong. Correct me if this is incorrect, but Nine haven’t been promoting Million Dollar Drop that heavily over the last month. There wouldn’t be that much hype surrounding the show so Nine are probably premiering the show too early. I was expecting Nine to leave this until after Easter.

This could top the timeslot the first week, but it will probably be axed by Easter non-ratings period.

  13. the promos are awful, the couple that look like bogans talking about what they could do with the money with a tacky backdrop and effects, very little effort.

i notice that with both TIYL and MDD eddie is nowhere to be seen in the promos. for a shows where the host plays a large role it seems od, did 9 get cold feet both times?

  14. If you get a chance to see the 1st episode of this series that went to air in America you’ll encounter the most annoying game show contestant *EVER*. And I couldn’t believe how talentless the guy hosting it was.

The show is really a version of Millionaire in reverse but the questions are totally absurd – rather than being fact based like Millionaire they quickly descend into trivial and ‘survey’ based like Family Fued which strips all credibility from the show.
