Brendan Fevola and chequebook journalism

Despite the lecturing from the Footy Show team, Nine paid a six figure sum to Fevola for an interview.

On Thursday night The Footy Show was discussing the latest tribulations of (former) AFL bad boy Brendan Fevola.

Sam Newman felt he wasn’t committed to his rehabilitation, succumbing too easily to gambling and lacking any remorse after being told to leave Crown Casino. Shane Crawford also chimed in, wanting to know where Fevola was about to fly to. Craig Hutchison said Fevola was departing for Los Angeles, noting its proximity to Las Vegas.

So drawn to the topic were some viewers that it helped Nine win the night -only its second ratings win this survey.

Today the Sunday Herald Sun says Nine has paid a six figure sum to Fevola for an interview.

It claims he was given two business-class return airfares to the US, valued about $16,000 each, as part of the deal along with $80,000 — half of which was paid up front, in cash.

How hollow those protests now seem.

Nine, having lectured the player on his need to stay home and rehabilitate, has just furnished a man with a gambling problem some $40,000 cash and flights to the US, all to help it win the ratings.

The Seven Network is also believed to be entertaining a one-off offer to talk to the troubled star, claims the newspaper.

Corrected.

  1. As much as I’m not a Fevola fan. Good luck to him for milking the media. This same “media” are the parasites that follow his every move. Leave him alone and stop making him the story. And if yiur that desperate for him to speak, then pay up .

  2. Why pay so much for a moron anyway. This is the same metwork that paid that tourist lost in the blue mountains 200K, when we all heard it before the interview , who really cares , and i never believed his story anyway to start with.

  3. This is a contributer to why these morons never learn.
They will always think they are above the law & humanity while they are treated like apparent “legends”.Again this sends out the wrong message to youth….
To do wrong is a good thing because you get rewarded.
Benji Marshall,Todd Carny & the list goes on & on…..
    I’ve got bi polar,i had a rain snap…..bs!
You abuse drugs, you abuse alcohol & you abuse your status.
Anyone in the “real” world would be penalised heavily without hesitation.
I choose to not watch NRL or AFL anymore.
Yet another great start to another scandal filled season.
    Grow up d***heads.

  4. Frankly, I am no longer surprised at how low they will go for cheap ratings. I don’t expect Seven to behave any better. It’s pretty sordid.

Lisa characterised it perfectly by labelling it as “enabling”. Giving Fevola, in his current personal circumstances, an overseas trip with a big bunch of cash is similar to paying Charlie Sheen for an interview with a big bag of cocaine.

  5. The Footy Show contributed to his downfall, because he was filming for them at the Brownlow and they encouraged his actions and then showed all the footage and laughed at it. Now they throw more cash at a gambling addict and taking advantage of him when he needs to go away and get help. Pretty pathetic by the Footy Show.

Fevola however doesn’t seem remorseful or serious about getting help anyway. So i got no sympathy for him. He brought it all on himself.

    1. Correction: Have revisited the original H Sun article, which was awkwardly worded, to remove 60 Minutes from the story. But frankly Nine paying for a Footy Show interview only makes it worse….

  6. David I think you should read the article again he didn’t accept the 60 Minutes offer but instead appeared on The Footy Show last week for about $80,000 and two plane tickets.

  7. Enabling comes to mine here. If Fev wanted redemption or to explain to fans his problems taking money from all these shows dosen’t look good. Hope he gives the money to his long suffering wife and kids
