Final broadcast from Bendigo Street

Channel Nine has aired its last programme from its historic Richmond studios, with the final Nine News bulletin airing last night.

Channel Nine has aired its last programme from its historic Richmond studios, with the final Nine News bulletin airing last night.

Presenter Peter Hitchener told TV Tonight it was an emotional moment.

“It was a very nostalgic evening and emotional saying goodbye but we are now looking forward to a new chapter at our new studios at 717 Bourke Street Melbourne,” he said.

“Bendigo Street Richmond has been our home for more than 50 years. The studios have earned our thanks and our respect.”

After the final episode, which included Tony Jones and Livinia Nixon, the Nine News team assembled on the studio floor, with a round of applause and photos opportunities. It was one of the few occasions many of the News team were at the one location.

“There were a few tears behind the scenes,” he said. “All of us were a bit more moved than we expected to be.”

Security and an emergency technical team of two are the only staff now on site, for the remainder of this week.

  1. I wasn’t having a go at you David. Nine have been going on and on about closing down Bendigo street for months. They’ve made such a huge thing about it and to be honest it’s been lots of navel gazing and reliving times long past. Now Nine needs to get on with improving their programs and not going down the path of axing new shows whenever they aren’t instant hits.

  2. They have duplicated the set at 717, I am working in the building and have walked past the studio.
Wonder what they’ll do with the second set? There’s room for it at my place…

  3. I wonder what they are going to do with the Bendigo St news set? I’ve heard rumors, that it was duplicated at Docklands, leaving Nine with a issue: Melbourne’s got two identical 9 News sets…

  4. Great…so is that the last last last last thing coming out of there? Think this has been the most drawn out ‘last’ ever. Get over it Channel 9, you’re just another trashy TV network that today is a shadow of it’s former self. Stop your navel gazing and lift your game, then someone outside of your insular clique might actually have some interest.

  5. Sad really – Ch 9 will never be the same again.

But at least the final production was a news show and not something horrid like The Footy Show or Warnie – I couldn’t bear that.

Vale Bendigo Street – thanks for the good times.
