Footy Show apologises for Megan Gale joke

Sunday Footy Show panellist Nathan Brown has apologised for comments he made about Megan Gale during a chat about an AFL match.

AFL Sunday Footy Show panellist Nathan Brown has been forced to apologise for comments he made on yesterday’s show referring to model and Project Runway host Megan Gale.

Gale is currently dating Carlton player Shaun Hampson, but Brown made double entrendre jokes when discussing Thursday night’s game betwen Richmond and Carlton.

“It was very blustery the other night at the MCG,” Brown said on air yesterday.

“Shaun Hampson could not quite get the kicking style right and when a gale is blowing for ya, I mean it really works. But a couple of times for Shaun Hampson the gale just didn’t blow in his direction and he’s missed a couple of easy ones with this blowing gale.”

Last night Brown said he was simply playing on words, and didn’t mean any sexual innuendo.

“I didn’t mean anything by it other than the fact those two were rumoured to be seeing each other and it was windy and it was blowing a gale,” he has told News Limited.

“I apologise if anyone took offence as it was not my intention … it was a play on words.”

Host James Brayshaw said of the Gale jokes: “I think that of all the real bad stuff you’ve brought into the Sunday Footy Show that’s close to the worst.”

Brown has been with Nine’s AFL shows since 1999.

  1. To those pretending not to see the sexual innuendo, I”ll give you a helping hand – “Shaun Hampson could not quite get the kicking style right and when a gale is blowing for ya, I mean it really works.”

Gil’s right, just not slightly humourous for anyone over 15yo

  2. When I first read the headline I was just surprised it wasn’t Sam Newman, reading the whole story its a bit of a beat up, its a comment made in poor taste. Anything more than that is a beat up.

For the people who are offended, get over yourselves, its a football player making sexually implicit jokes, shock horror… this is the 21st century not the 19th.

  3. I was watching the show when that comment was made. I didnt find anything wrong with it. i just thought that he was describing the weather conditions and Shaun Hampson’s kicking style. i didnt even notice it when James said “I think that of all the real bad stuff you’ve brought into the Sunday Footy Show that’s close to the worst.”. Maybe it is because i am not in the celebrity loop and didnt know that Megan was dating Shaun. Still it tjsut goes to show how careful you need to be. Because their are plenty of Ned Flanders out their taping shows and if they find anyhing wrong they complain. That said Nathan has had plenty of time on both footy shows he should know better.

  4. Perhaps he needs to attend one of those AFL Seminars that teach you to be respectful towards women. The very fact that they are considered necessary speaks volumes.

  5. The jokes are just puerile and juvenile, what’s really offensive is his statement of innocence….I find that arrogant and insulting – sorry Mr Brown that makes you a Capital L Loser on two counts!!!

  6. This guy is kidding, right???? He meant no sexual innuendo? He must think we are a pack of simpletons. His routine is dripping with a slang term referencing a particular intimate act. It is not even amusing, just stupid shoolboy humour. I would be very annoyed if I was Megan Gale, that’s for sure. Once again, the Footy Show engages in barrel scraping of the worst kind.

  7. How dumb does Nathan Brown think people are? If he thinks that anyone would believe that his comments weren’t supposed to be sexual he’s kidding himself.

  8. The joke’s a bit confusing for me… I wouldn’t have known there was any sexual innuendo. For one, I wouldn’t know who Megan Gale was dating, and two, I don’t even know what Brown is on about.
