Glee’s moment of pure glee

Spoiler: Monday night's episode of Glee has a scene that has generated some talk in the US.

Spoiler: Monday night’s episode of Glee has generated some talk in the US -don’t they all?- because it includes a same-sex smooch between Blaine (Darren Criss) and Kurt (Chris Colfer).

The kiss has been a long time coming and it isn’t remotely fleeting. Those warblin’ Warblers have been dancing around the question for weeks now and all the other private school boys seem content to have no more role than playing their back-up singers.

Of course it isn’t the show’s first same-sex smooch. Santana and Brittany are messing with our heads. I’m struggling to remember if there have been others, too.

This blog in the US says the kiss is “played like an afterthought, as if the writers and producers of the series looked at the ongoing episode lineup and realised, ‘Oh, right — we’re nearing the end of the season and we’re supposed to have these characters smooch at some point; might as well do it here.'”

Having now watched the episode I’m not so sure I subscribe to that theory.

But I did think it was overshadowed by an earlier moment when you can see Blaine’s sudden realisation that he loves Kurt. And it’s all done without a word. The more we see of Darren Criss the better he is.

“Original Song” also features two original songs for Glee (and that’s definitely a first). Both are pretty good.

Kathy Griffin has a fleeting role along with Loretta Devine.

It airs 7:30pm Monday on TEN.

  1. I gave up after Season1 too, but from the outer Blaine seems to be owning his role on the show and a shame he wasn’t there from the start. Watching the lead up to the kiss, I just did not buy what was coming out of his mouth about Kurt. All I have seen of Kurt lately is him staring into Blaine’seyes with a coffee in his hand. Does take all kinds, I suppose 🙂

  2. “Having now watched the episode I’m not so sure I subscribe to that theory.”

    No I don’t either.

Obviously it’s a rush to get promos out there once TEN receives an episode seemingly not it advance of its US broadcast. But David your statement got me wondering – I suppose it’s a similar rush to get screeners out too…

Anyway, four weeks of repeats now peeps.

  3. Nothing to fuss about … just a natural response between them at that point of their relationship … treat it as any other kiss in the show is the beat thing thay can do … because it should be unremarkable! Blain’s realisation that he loves Kurt is the really important moment!

  4. Amazing moment. I love Blaine, and Darren Criss is phenomenal. Great singer and performer. But i was kinda hoping Blaine got a hot boyfriend and not Kurt. Would have rather a character like Blaine from the beginning also. A gay character that isn’t of the stereotype but completely comfortable with himself.

  5. I thought the kiss was beautiful.
Their relationship is certainly not forced, it’s been a long time coming for these two to finally get together.
I can’t wait to see what happens between Kurt & Blaine in future episodes 🙂

  6. Hands down best kiss I’ve seen on TV. It’s hard to believe both are actors playing characters.
That moment of realisation during Blackbird was gorgeous.
I’m sure a lot of Aussies would have been spoiled about it already since it was on ninemsn’s front page yesterday.

  7. Re: Other kisses

There was the kiss between Kurt and Karofsky, but since Karofsky forced himself on Kurt and then threatened to kill him afterwards, it wasn’t the best “first kiss” for Kurt (excluding his true “first kiss” with Brittany).

  8. This will be Kurt’s second kiss in the show, but the first that he would’ve wanted. Karofsky kissed Kurt during an argument in the episode “Never Been Kissed”, which Kurt objected to.

  9. It’s amazing how this show is only one and two thirds a season long, but feels like its been running for four years… I gave up after season 1, looks like I haven’t missed much…

  10. Totally agree with you David the moment hen Blaine realizes is truly amazing without a word but pure face and eyes from a distance I think it’s great they have done this nice and slowly 🙂

  11. I so don’t subscribe to the theory that it was an afterthought at all…. the sequence when Kurt is singing Black Bird and the camera is slowly zooming in on Blaine and the realisation of what is happening is amazing.. The look and the words being sung is perfect.

The moment when it happens is awesome. My favourite line of all time “Oh there you are” and “you truely move me” are not throw away lines that writers just come up with because the show goes into a break.

David, there is also the kiss between Kurt and Karofsky which lead to Kurt leaving the Glee Club and moving schools.

Darren Criss has been amazing addition to this season of Glee – great actor and singer but most of all a great performer. His performance of Raise Your Glass is fantastic and almost as good as Teenage Dream !!!

BTW – Kathy Griffin as a Sarah Palin look a like politician is priceless !!

And yes, Im a hopeless Glee fan and make no apology for it !!!!

  12. I like Glee but I don’t actually watch it. It is usually on in the back ground whilst I am working and writing at the computer. I have watched a few eps but the storylines are pretty ordinary and just don’t grab me. So i have reverted to just listening to the music again.

  13. i thought the scene was so tender, meaningful and lovely for both of them. It was a long time coming but I think they played the whole thing well storyline wise. Roll on more of them as a couple i say.

  14. This was a brilliant moment! I think Blaine and Kurt could become the gay supercouple that will still be remembered 30 years from now. And I agree, Darren Chris is awesome!
