Kath & Kim for the big screen

Fountain Lakes' foxy ladies are making a feature filum.

Kath Day-Knight and Kim Craig are taking to the big screen with their very own feature film.

The project to be known as The Kath and Kim Filum has received funding from Screen Australia.

Described as “A Fountain Lakes Fairytale. Kath and Kim’s whirlwind trip OS becomes a vajazzling tale of love, lust and revolution… What’s not to like?”

Indeed.

The film will be directed by Ted Emery and produced by Rick McKenna, husband of Gina Riley.

Da Kath and Kim Code telemovie aired in 2005 on the ABC, as a low-budget project. It parodied the Da Vinci Code and featured a number of guest stars.

“Australia’s comedic sensibility is world renowned and is a distinctive part of our cultural identity,” said chief executive, Ruth Harley. ”The Kath & Kim Filum represents iconic Australian comedy.”

The duo’s last television series aired on Seven in 2007 and there have been persistent rumours about ne projects with everything from a new series to a stage musical.

Last month Peter Rowsthorn told ABC Radio he would be resuming work with the hit comedy -but who knew he meant as a film?

  1. I have seen every episode of Kath & Kim and have watched it many times again on DVD. I still pick things up that I missed first time around. Basically I think nearly every word that comes out of their mouths is funny.

  2. I’m a latecomer to Kath and Kim and really like it. V underrated writing, I think. Should be a fun movie. Hard to see it won’t be a big hit.

  3. Talk about flogging a dead horse.

The show was wonderfully fresh and creative in the days on ABC but once they went commercial they not only sold out but so diluted their product that it’s now merely a shadow of it’s former self.

  4. Da kath n kim show sucked !!

They could make some awesome story lines around sharons weight loss, should make her popular with the lads making kim really jealous

  5. i would be looking forward to this if it was made back in its glory days of series 1-3 but if its anything like series 4 it will be a big disappointment, still i hope for a return to its former quality.

  6. How exciting!!! Been eagerly awaiting new kath and kim since the 2007 series!!
Still hope they do a live tour after the movie – like little britains tour.

  7. Sending a tv cast on an o/s holiday for the big screen is a stale idea, so it will be interesting to see how they make it fresh. Extra padding for Sharon’s character?

  8. if it’s going to be part funded by 7, can we assume channel 7 show plugs throughout? At various points through the movie, the girls find themselves on sunrise, deal or no deal, my kitchen rules…..while bumping into various C7 “celebrities”….

  9. @Dirk: I’m certain that the extreme silliness was intentional. =P

Kath & Kim is one of those character based comedies that rely on the idiosyncrasies of the characters to serve the mundanity of the storylines. Mr. Bean and Beavis and Butt-head were quite similar to K&K in that respect.

  10. Oh no, the popularity of this show by-passed me, I could never understand it, it was silliness to the extreme. Was hoping to never have to see this tripe again.
