From May this year children’s content which currently screens in the mornings on ABC1 will shift to ABC2.

ABC News Breakfast will be switching to ABC1.

Ahead of that move, ABC2 will begin playing first run episodes of  Play School from April 11 at 9:30am. In this interim period ABC1 will air rerun eps (from a different series). It will launch with 15 new episodes on ABC2 introducing new presenter Emma Palmer.

Since graduating from NIDA in 2007, Palmer has voiced a cartoon character in Nine’s children’s series Gasp, and appeared in All Saints and with the Sydney Theatre Company, Darlinghurst Theatre and Griffin Theatre Company.

“Joining the Play School family is such an honour and privilege. I grew up watching Play School and to be given this opportunity to join the show is a dream come true. I hope I can share lots of laughter and fun with viewers at home,” she said.

The show will remain in both afternoon slots of 3:05pm on ABC1 and 4:30pm on ABC2.

  1. This comment is a bit late, being almost six weeks since it was posted, but on ABC3 there was a promo on announcing that the kid’s shows on ABC1 are moving to ABC3

This is a link to the promo I saw that I found on YouTube
    youtube.com/watch?v=uTjRHyz9v1M
Mods: If you remove the link, that’s OK, but show it to the writer of the main article first please =)

  2. I live 1 hour from Perth. We are not getting digital tv in our area ever!
We already have bad reception and very little choice of programs.
Thanks, now we won’t even have kids programs.
Free to air, I don’t think so, we’ll have to pay to get any tv at all and no subsidy on a satelite dish until the cut off in 2013.

  3. What about the shows for the young adults or big kids at heart. Will they stay as they are or be changed too.ABC 1 offerings between the hours of five and six provide a great alternative to Hot Seat(Can’t Stand Eddie)and that irritating Deal or No Deal(Find Andrew O’Keefe totally irritating)so won’t watch either.

  4. Being a father of a 3 year old, I still fail to understand why we need two channels full of kids content.. Kids should be playing outside, not sitting on their a*ses watching tv.
One of 3 national broadcaster channels for kids, fine… but they’ve destroyed ABC2.

  5. Why does Playschool move to ABC2 in the mornings? I thought ABC News Breakfast only went to 9am, not 10am? Or is this a sign the Education block from 10am to 11am will finally disappear and be gone for good, which is a shame as ABC daytime many moons ago used to be Education from 10am to 3pm with a 15 minute News Update which was state based at 1pm. And as for WA getting a delayed broadcast of ABC News Breakfast from 6am to 9am, why doesn’t the ABC News Breakfast go again live only to WA like they do for Midday Report? Same goes for QLD, they should be live for the whole 3 hours 6am to 9am QLD time when the Southern States are in daylight saving. All too sensible of course.

  6. @Kuttyswood re ABC2/ABC3 downtime. Wouldnt it be simple, cheap, and not to mention fantastic to have rage on every night from 9PM until 6AM on ABC3

  7. It makes great sense.I don’t watch any of the young kids shows in the morning but It could do well for an alternative entertainment viewing channel at night.

What would be nice is like the old days with the original Degrassi The ABC putting on today’s New Generation up against the likes of Home and Away and Neighbours in a similar time slot too giving older children and young adults a decent alternative to either.

  8. Good news for the ABC, I think ABC News Breakfast should have been on ABC1 from the very beginning.

As for ABC News Breakfast being live in W.A – I really don’t think it’s a necessity to have it live unless you are getting up for an early shift at 3am and need to watch ABC News breakfast at 3am. I really hope ABC News 24 gets rid of it though. No need to have it simulcasting on ABC 1 or ABC News 24 at the same time, like they do with Q&A, Don’t get why we need to see these “shows” live.

  9. Do you know what the plans are for the Children’s School Education shows that generally show at 10am after Play School on ABC1? I wish the ABC would show more of these (and put them on iView)

  10. It’s more likely, this was a decision based on digital takeup rates. The ABC sees it as the right time to make the switch: as digital switchover momentum is accelerating rapidly.

The next change the ABC needs to look at is implementing 24hr transmissions for ABC2 (having ABC For Kids on 2 from 7am-7pm and airing general content from 7pm-7am) followed by finding ways to use the ABC3 downtime creatively.

  11. Agree with you completely Jeremy. People in WA need to get their priorities right, if they are so desperate for news at 3am I suggest that they check their twitter feed or their preferred news website.

I assume that News Breakfast will stay on ABC1 permanently, it wants to compete with Sunrise and Today. This is obviously a strategic plan by ABC1 channel controller Brendan Drill to increase the channel’s ratings. Good move ABC.

  12. im from perth and everything (news and sport) needs to be live
general entertainment shows can be on delay

i agree that this is a good move for ABC.
i wonder if the rumours that onehd may simulcast skynews (meaning there is a free to air 24 news channel) may see the abc cancel their abc24 news channel (which lets face it has been ordinary), and instead ploug that money back into program content and development on abc’s 1, 2, and 3?

  13. Great to see Play School retain a 9:30 am timeslot. Do we know if ABC2 will air season41 of Sesame Street, which aired late last year on the US.

  14. With Tony Abbott timing his daily censure motions at 2:50pm each Parliament Question Time sitting, Play School’s ABC1 airing (that typically cuts the Government’s reply) has been getting mentioned both within the House & by the wider media today & yesterday. Kinda funny hearing grown adults debate Abbott & his Play School motives.

  15. This makes a lot of sense. ABC2 can serve as a young kids channel in the morning, and alternative entertainment viewing channel in the evenings.

The setup leaves ABC3 targeted at older children.

I wonder what ABC will leave News Breakfast on ABC1 permanently, or only show it live on ABC News 24 once the full migration to digital is complete.

Do those in WA want shows live, or shows at the appropriate ‘slot’ they were intended for? It seems news should be live, but having a breakfast show in Perth from 3am-6am would likely have zero viewers.
