Brian True-May, producer of Midsomer Murders will step down following his comments about the absence of ethnic diversity in the show.

He had said in an interview: “We just don’t have ethnic minorities involved. Because it wouldn’t be the English village with them. It just wouldn’t work.

“We’re the last bastion of Englishness and I want to keep it that way.”

His comments ignited media headlines and an internal investigation by Production company All3Media.

An ITV spokesman said: “We welcome the apology from Brian True-May and understand that he will step down from his role on Midsomer Murders at the end of the current production run.”

The series has just returned with a new star, Neil Dudgeon, who has joined the cast as DCI John Barnaby, replacing actor John Nettles (DCI Tom Barnaby) as the central character.

  2. i don’t watch this show as its too boring but its a shame he had to made an example of for the sake of itv not losing face…maybe a new producer and new lead will breathe some new life into it anyway…expect a token indian family moving soon.

  5. With its creator and its main actor both gone, and it having gone on for a rather ridiculous length of time, Midsomer Murders may not survive for much longer.

    I’m not sure if what Mr True-May said was a serious offence. At first I thought it was something of a short-sighted view, but after reading around the Net and seeing what others had to say, it apparently really does reflect the true racial mix of those areas of England. Artificially including a ratio of cultures that didn’t represent the area may well be the wrong approach. Having said that, I’m sure I’ve seen non-white actors throughout the series on occasion. Haven’t I?
